What Does a Power Distribution Engineer Do?

As a power distribution engineer, your primary responsibilities involve the design and maintenance of electrical distribution systems. Your duties include developing site electrical procedures, providing technical guidance for wiring systems, overseeing an electrical system operation from start to finish, ensuring applications meet regulation standards, and providing technical support to various personnel. You typically also develop project timelines and programming reports, estimate costs, define testing criteria, and help implement new engineering methods. You also interface with vendors, utility companies, consultants, and external contractors to oversee installations and equipment maintenance.

What is the difference between Power Distribution Engineer vs Power Systems Engineer?

AspectPower Distribution EngineerPower Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, PE license often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, PE license common
Work EnvironmentDesigning and maintaining electrical distribution systems, fieldwork, substation workAnalyzing and optimizing entire power systems, simulations, planning
Industry UsageUtilities, construction, infrastructure projectsUtilities, consulting firms, power generation companies

Power Distribution Engineers focus on designing and maintaining electrical distribution systems, ensuring reliable power delivery at the local level. Power Systems Engineers work on the broader power grid, analyzing and optimizing entire electrical networks. While both roles require similar credentials and often work within the utility industry, their scope and daily tasks differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Power Distribution Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Power Distribution Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems analysis, and often a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, ETAP, and SCADA systems, as well as relevant certifications like a Professional Engineer (PE) license, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with teams and addressing technical challenges. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring reliable, safe, and efficient power delivery within complex electrical networks.

What is a Power Distribution Engineer?

A Power Distribution Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, maintaining, and improving electrical distribution systems that deliver electricity from substations to homes, businesses, and industries. They ensure that the electrical infrastructure operates safely, efficiently, and reliably by planning network layouts, selecting appropriate equipment, and addressing any issues that arise. Power Distribution Engineers often work with utility companies, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with safety standards and codes. Their role is critical in supporting the growing demands on electrical grids and integrating new technologies such as renewable energy sources.

What are some typical challenges a Power Distribution Engineer faces when coordinating with utility companies and construction teams?

Power Distribution Engineers often navigate complex coordination between utility companies, construction teams, and local authorities to ensure projects stay on schedule and comply with safety standards. Challenges can include managing changes in project scope, resolving unexpected site conditions, and balancing multiple stakeholders' priorities. Effective communication, adaptability, and a solid understanding of regulatory requirements are essential to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring successful project delivery.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive Salary + Bonus Potential!
  • Paid Time Off, 401K Matching, Medical, Dental, and Vision Benefits!
  • High-growth organization with advancement opportunities!
  • Diverse, Collaborative, & Fun Work Environment!

About the Role:

The Electrical Engineer designs and integrates electrical power distribution systems for modular solutions serving mission-critical data centers and industrial markets (oil & gas, renewables/BESS, mining, and utility). You will take ownership of electrical scope on projects of moderate to high complexity, coordinating interfaces across switchgear/switchboards, transformers, protection, ATS, UPS systems, batteries, grounding, and auxiliary systems. This role partners closely with mechanical, controls, manufacturing, and field teams to deliver safe, code-compliant, manufacturable modular systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop one-lines, three-lines (as required), and overall power architectures for modular E-Houses and skids (MV and LV).
  • Size and specify major equipment (switchgear/switchboards, transformers, bus duct/busway interfaces, breakers, fuses, metering, power quality components).
  • Perform equipment sizing studies and calculations as applicable (load summaries, short circuit, protective device coordination inputs, arc-flash data inputs, voltage drop where required).
  • Define grounding and bonding strategy, including interfaces to skid/baseframe and site grounding systems.
  • Specify and integrate ATS and UPS systems including bypass/maintenance arrangements, redundancy philosophies (N, N+1, 2N), and operational modes.
  • Coordinate electrical interfaces for battery systems supporting UPS and/or energy storage (DC distribution, battery cabinets/racks, disconnects, monitoring, and safety interfaces).
  • Define interlocks and control interfaces (alarms, permissives, trips, emergency power off) in coordination with controls/protection teams.
  • Develop schematics and wiring concepts for auxiliary power, controls power, lighting, receptacles, and panelboards within the module.
  • Coordinate with mechanical/fire systems for power and signal interfaces (HVAC units, dampers, detection/suppression releasing panels, ventilation shutdowns).
  • Support compliance activities as required (UL/NRTL, customer standards, IEC interfaces when applicable) and coordinate with suppliers on documentation.
  • Produce and/or review electrical drawing packages (one-lines, schematics, layouts, interconnect diagrams, cable schedules) and support BOM development.
  • Support FAT/SAT and commissioning activities; troubleshoot electrical issues and drive corrective actions.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience designing industrial or mission-critical power distribution systems (data center experience strongly preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with one-line creation and electrical system integration across switchgear/switchboards, protection, and controls interfaces.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. electrical codes/standards relevant to the work (e.g., NEC/NFPA 70, NFPA 70E; familiarity with IEEE/NEMA/UL practices as applicable).
  • Proficiency with common engineering tools (SolidWorks Electrical & AutoCAD Electrical; Microsoft Excel; exposure to ETAP/SKM/EasyPower or similar is a plus).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with MV equipment (e.g., 5kV-35kV class) and/or packaged substations and E-Houses.
  • Experience with UPS topologies, maintenance bypass schemes, and data center redundancy design.
  • Familiarity with protective relay selection/settings coordination workflows and metering/SCADA integration.
  • Experience supporting UL/NRTL listings or major customer compliance programs for modular power equipment.
  • PE license or EIT with path to licensure.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Work Environment:
May work in various settings at the Maverick Power facilities, in offices, in multiple shops, and in commercial buildings.
