Job description

Position Summary
The BI & Data Applications Engineer is an experienced BI and data engineering professional responsible for building and maintaining Focus's data consumption layer - the reports, dashboards, and interactive applications that let the business work directly with data in Snowflake. This role spans two connected disciplines: traditional Power BI report development and platform administration built on top of Snowflake semantic models, and hands-on development of interactive data applications (e.g., Streamlit in Snowflake, and custom React + FastAPI applications hosted natively in Snowflake). You'll use AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot to accelerate delivery, and partner closely with data engineers and analytics engineers who build the underlying semantic models. The ideal candidate is comfortable moving between report design, platform administration, and full-stack application development, with a strong focus on making data genuinely usable for business stakeholders.
This role is hybrid with 3 days/week onsite in St. Louis.
Primary Responsibilities
  • BI Reporting & Semantic Model Consumption: Design, build, and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards built on top of Snowflake semantic models and semantic views, ensuring reporting is accurate, performant, and aligned to business needs.
  • Power BI Platform Administration: Own Power BI tenant administration, including workspace governance, row-level security (RLS), capacity management, gateway configuration, and DirectQuery performance tuning against Snowflake.
  • Data Application Development: Design, build, and maintain interactive data applications directly in Snowflake, using Streamlit in Snowflake and custom container-based applications (React frontend with a FastAPI backend) via Snowpark Container Services, enabling business users to interact with data beyond static dashboards.
  • AI-Assisted Development: Leverage AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) to accelerate development of reports, applications, and backend services, while maintaining code quality and review standards.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with data engineers and analytics engineers who build and maintain Snowflake semantic models, and work directly with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into usable reporting and application experiences.
  • Performance & Access Governance: Monitor and optimize performance across Power BI reports and Snowflake-hosted applications, and manage access controls for reports, apps, and underlying datasets in coordination with data platform governance standards.
  • Application Lifecycle & Deployment: Manage the full lifecycle of BI reports and data applications, including version control (Git/GitHub), CI/CD for application deployment, testing, and release management.

Required Skills
  • BI & Reporting: Advanced Power BI development skills (DAX, data modeling, report design) and administration experience (workspace governance, RLS, gateways, capacity planning). Experience connecting Power BI to Snowflake via DirectQuery or Import against semantic models.
  • Application Development: Proficiency building Streamlit applications, along with experience using React (or a similar frontend framework) and FastAPI (or a similar Python backend framework) to build custom applications. Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and deploying containerized apps, ideally within Snowflake via Snowpark Container Services.
  • Snowflake & SQL: Strong SQL skills and familiarity with Snowflake semantic models/semantic views, Cortex Analyst, and general Snowflake data structures.
  • AI-Assisted Development Tools: Comfort using AI coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot) as part of a daily development workflow.
  • Programming: Solid Python skills for backend and application development, and working knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript for frontend development.
  • Version Control & CI/CD: Experience with Git/GitHub and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions) for deploying applications and reports.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions, with excellent stakeholder communication skills.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Experience: Typically 4+ years of professional experience in BI development and/or administration, with demonstrated experience expanding into application development (e.g., Streamlit or full-stack web applications).
  • Expertise: Proven track record of owning a BI platform end-to-end and delivering interactive data applications beyond static dashboards and reports.
  • Industry: Experience in financial services, wealth management, or other regulated industries is a plus.
  • Working Style: Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage priorities, and take ownership of data products from requirements through ongoing support.

This position is an exempt position. The annualized base pay range for this role is expected to be between $110,000 - $130,000. Actual base pay could vary based on factors including but not limited to experience, subject matter expertise, geographic location where work will be performed and the applicant's skill set. The base pay is just one component of the total compensation package for employees. Other reward may include an annual cash bonus and a comprehensive benefits package.
