A Powder Painter is responsible for applying dry powder coating to surfaces, typically metal, using specialized spray equipment. This role involves surface preparation, equipment operation, and quality control to ensure a high-quality coating. Powder Painters commonly work in manufacturing, automotive, and industrial settings.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a powder painter?

As a Powder Painter, your typical day involves preparing surfaces by cleaning or sanding, applying powder coatings using spray equipment, and then overseeing the curing process in industrial ovens. You'll also be responsible for setting up and maintaining equipment, inspecting finished products for quality, and adhering to strict safety and environmental guidelines. Collaboration with production teams and supervisors is common to ensure that deadlines and quality standards are met. This hands-on role often requires standing for extended periods and attention to detail to achieve uniform coverage and durable finishes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a powder painter?

To thrive as a Powder Painter, you need practical experience in surface preparation, color application, and knowledge of industrial finishing techniques, often backed by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with powder coating equipment, spray guns, curing ovens, and safety certifications such as OSHA training are commonly required. Attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment are valuable soft skills. These abilities ensure high-quality, consistent finishes and help maintain a safe, efficient production workflow.

Job description

Powder Coating Technician | $28–$31/hr

PVF Finishing (Owen Industries) – Carter Lake, IA | 1st Shift | Monday–Thursday, 4x10 | Full-Time

Own the Powder Line. Four Days On, Three Days Off.

PVF Finishing is looking for an experienced Powder Coating Technician who knows the trade inside and out. This isn’t a helper role — you’ll be the person who keeps the entire powder coat line running at its best. From managing color changes and monitoring equipment settings to performing daily maintenance, quality checks, and directing the crew, you’re the technical backbone of the paint operation.

If you have 5+ years of powder coating experience, a sharp eye for quality, and the ability to lead a team while keeping the line moving — we want to talk. The schedule is Monday through Thursday, four 10-hour days, and the pay is $28–$31/hr depending on your experience.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage and perform color changes on the powder coat line
  • Monitor line flow and flex staffing as required to maintain daily production schedules
  • Coordinate product entering and exiting the system to meet customer delivery expectations
  • Monitor powder coating equipment to ensure proper settings and adjustments are maintained throughout the shift
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance routines on all powder coat line equipment
  • Execute required testing on all equipment per established schedules
  • Apply powder coatings using proper application procedures and techniques
  • Inspect work in progress for quality issues such as runs, missed areas, and coverage problems
  • Clean and maintain paint booths, including robots, lights, and filter changes
  • Perform quality checks including visual inspection and electronic mil testing
  • Maintain powder levels and storage areas
  • Ensure all required SAP transactions are completed accurately
  • Keep all paint areas clean and organized
  • Support, encourage, and help direct crew members in the paint department
  • Carry out all duties in accordance with ISO standards and company procedures
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of powder coating experience strongly preferred
  • Hands-on experience with powder coat line operations — color changes, equipment settings, application techniques, and quality inspection
  • Ability to perform mil testing and other electronic/visual quality checks
  • Experience with powder coat line maintenance — booths, robots, filters, and related equipment
  • Basic computer skills; familiarity with SAP or similar ERP systems a plus
  • Ability to direct and work effectively as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and commitment to meeting customer quality and delivery standards
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to safety — ability to operate all equipment per applicable regulations and procedures
  • Good attendance and punctuality

Compensation & Benefits

✅ $28–$31/hr depending on experience

✅ Monday–Thursday, 4x10 schedule — every Friday off

✅ Health, Dental & Vision insurance

✅ Life/AD&D and Short & Long-Term Disability coverage

✅ 401(k) after 6 months

✅ PTO and paid holidays — accrual begins immediately

Medical, Dental, Vision, and Disability benefits begin the 1st of the month after 30 days of employment.

Why PVF Finishing?
