What is a PostgreSQL database engineer?

A PostgreSQL Database Engineer is a technology professional who specializes in designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing databases using the PostgreSQL relational database management system. Their responsibilities include database schema design, performance tuning, security management, data backup and recovery, and ensuring high availability. They work closely with developers and system administrators to support application requirements and maintain data integrity. PostgreSQL Database Engineers play a critical role in organizations that rely on robust data storage and management solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by PostgreSQL database engineers when optimizing database performance?

PostgreSQL Database Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing query performance bottlenecks, optimizing indexing strategies, and balancing workloads across multiple databases. Large datasets and complex queries can sometimes result in slow response times, requiring engineers to analyze query plans and adjust configurations accordingly. Additionally, ensuring data consistency and high availability in distributed environments can be demanding, especially when working with replication and backup strategies. Collaboration with developers and system administrators is crucial to address these challenges effectively and maintain optimal database performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PostgreSQL database engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PostgreSQL Database Engineer, you need strong expertise in SQL, database design, performance tuning, and a solid understanding of PostgreSQL architecture, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like pgAdmin, backup and replication utilities, and relevant certifications such as the EDB PostgreSQL Associate are highly valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in managing data integrity and collaborating with development teams. These competencies are essential to ensure reliable, optimized, and secure database environments that support critical business operations.

What is the difference between Postgresql Database Engineer vs Database Administrator?

AspectPostgresql Database EngineerDatabase Administrator
Primary FocusDesigning, developing, and optimizing PostgreSQL databasesMaintaining, securing, and ensuring the performance of databases
Skills & CertificationsSQL, PostgreSQL expertise, scripting, performance tuningDatabase management, backup/recovery, security protocols
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, data engineering projectsIT operations, support teams, enterprise environments

While both roles involve working with databases, a PostgreSQL Database Engineer primarily focuses on designing and optimizing PostgreSQL databases, whereas a Database Administrator handles ongoing maintenance, security, and performance management. The roles often overlap but serve different stages of the database lifecycle.

Senior Database Engineer

PostgreSQL

Position Overview

We are looking for a skilled Database Engineer with strong expertise in PostgreSQL to help design, optimize, and maintain our database infrastructure. You will play an important role in ensuring the high performance, availability, and scalability of our database environments while supporting development and operational teams. Drive best practices and consistency of database principles implemented across all the product areas.

This role applies solid PostgreSQL and data engineering skills to support database design decisions, deliver reliable database services, and collaborate closely with engineering and product teams.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of PostgreSQL database systems, ensuring they are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with business goals.
  • Optimize PostgreSQL performance through query tuning, indexing strategies, and configuration adjustments.
  • Manage database replication, backup, and recovery processes using PostgreSQL-native tools and third-party solutions.
  • Monitor database health and proactively address performance bottlenecks and system anomalies.
  • Collaborate with application developers to design efficient data models and support application performance.
  • Ensure database security, access control, and compliance with data governance policies.
  • Support PostgreSQL upgrades, patching, and migration efforts across environments.
  • Implement and maintain observability using Prometheus/Grafana dashboards, alerting policies, and centralized logging.
  • Partner with operational and infrastructure teams to ensure database reliability, capacity planning, and smooth day-to-day operations across environments.
  • Create and maintain runbooks, participate in on-call rotations, triage incidents, and contribute to blameless post-incident reviews.
  • Participate in process-improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, collaboration, and data quality within the engineering team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Proof of authorization to work in the United States.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (Master's a plus).
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in database engineering, with a focus on PostgreSQL and scalable data architectures.
  • Solid knowledge of database design principles, normalization, and development methodologies.
  • Proficiency in PostgreSQL, including features such as partitioning, replication, and performance tuning.
  • Experience working closely with application developers to refine and implement data models and queries.
  • Understanding of relational and NoSQL databases, including database design and data modeling.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL performance tuning, query optimization, and monitoring tools (e.g., pg_stat_statements, pgBadger, pgBouncer).
  • Experience with database schema version control tools such as Liquibase, or AtlasGo.
  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL replication, including configuration and management of backup tools such as pgBackRest or Barman, and executing failover strategies.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes (K8s) for deploying, operating, and troubleshooting containerized workloads.
  • Working knowledge of containerized deployments (Docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Ansible).
  • Familiarity with source control management (e.g., Git/GitHub) and standard branching, review, and versioning workflows.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and integrating database changes into automated deployment workflows.
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL operators for Kubernetes (e.g., CloudNativePG, EDB Postgres)
  • Experience deploying and managing PostgreSQL on Kubernetes (Helm charts, StatefulSets, and persistent storage management) is a plus.
  • Experience deploying, running, and managing PostgreSQL databases within on-premises infrastructure environments, containerized platforms like RedHat OpenShift.

Soft Skills

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively across teams and with contacts of different backgrounds and levels of experience.
