How much do postdoctoral neuromodulation jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 10, 2026, the average yearly pay for postdoctoral neuromodulation in the United States is $59,022.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49,000.00 and $66,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Neuromodulation researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Neuromodulation researcher, you need a strong background in neuroscience, electrophysiology, and experimental design, typically supported by a Ph.D. in neuroscience or a related field. Experience with neuroimaging tools (e.g., fMRI, EEG), brain stimulation technologies (e.g., TMS, tDCS), and data analysis software (e.g., MATLAB, Python) is highly valued. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for managing complex research projects and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for advancing neuromodulation research and translating scientific findings into clinical or technological innovations.

What is a Postdoctoral Neuromodulation researcher?

A Postdoctoral Neuromodulation researcher is a scientist who has completed their doctoral studies (PhD or MD) and is conducting advanced research on neuromodulation, which involves the use of technologies or therapies to alter nerve activity in the brain or nervous system. These researchers typically work in academic, clinical, or industrial settings to develop and test new neuromodulation techniques, such as deep brain stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, or neurofeedback. Their work aims to better understand brain function and to develop treatments for neurological or psychiatric disorders. The postdoctoral period is a time for building expertise, publishing research, and preparing for a career as an independent scientist.

What is the difference between Postdoctoral Neuromodulation vs Postdoctoral Neuroscientist?

AspectPostdoctoral NeuromodulationPostdoctoral Neuroscientist
Required CredentialsPhD in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, or related field; specialized training in neuromodulation techniquesPhD in neuroscience or related field; focus on brain research and experimental design
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, hospitals, clinical settings focusing on neuromodulation therapiesAcademic labs, research institutions, or industry settings studying brain function
Employer & Industry UsageHospitals, biotech companies, clinical research centersUniversities, research institutes, pharmaceutical companies

Postdoctoral Neuromodulation specialists focus on developing and applying neuromodulation techniques like TMS or DBS, often in clinical or applied settings. Postdoctoral Neuroscientists typically conduct fundamental brain research, exploring neural mechanisms. Both roles require a PhD but differ in their focus and work environment, with neuromodulation roles emphasizing clinical applications and neuroscientist roles emphasizing basic research.

What are some common challenges faced by postdoctoral researchers in neuromodulation, and how can they be addressed?

Postdoctoral researchers in neuromodulation often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly evolving technologies, balancing independent research with collaborative projects, and securing funding for novel studies. Navigating interdisciplinary teams—often including neuroscientists, engineers, and clinicians—requires strong communication and adaptability. Proactively seeking mentorship, participating in workshops, and networking with peers can help address these challenges and foster both technical and professional growth.

Job description

The Dynamic Imaging of Cognition & Neuromodulation (DICoN) Laboratory led by Dr. Tony Wilson at Boys Town National Research Hospital seeks a postdoctoral fellow to work on NIH funded studies of altered brain dynamics. We currently have NIH supported projects examining the impact of substance use on brain function and cognitive decline in aging. The successful candidate will focus on one of these projects with the opportunity to contribute to both through data analyses and authoring manuscripts. The DICoN Laboratory is one of seven laboratories within the state-of-the-art Institute for Human Neuroscience, which is an 18,000 square foot facility that houses major research-dedicated tools, including two next-generation 306-sensor MEG Neo systems, a Siemens Prisma 3T MRI system, a prototype 208-channel OPM system, 64-lead transcranial direct- and alternating-current stimulation (tDCS/tACS) equipment, a high performance computer cluster, and extensive support staff.
The position is up to three years in duration. Within the two projects noted above, the area of research focus is flexible, but demonstrated expertise in neuroimaging, statistical modeling, and/or cognitive neuroscience is essential. Applicants with previous experience in addiction science, aging, and/or clinical neuroscience will be given preference, but we are primarily seeking the best candidate to join our group.
Successful candidates will have a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in neuroscience, psychology, computer science, or a related field, with an excellent publication record for their career stage. They will join a vibrant and rapidly growing group of cognitive neuroscientists using world-class neuroimaging equipment and resources, with significant opportunities within the Institute for career development and promotion to faculty. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
For further information, visit the DICoN Laboratory's website.
