What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Battery Technology, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Battery Technology, you typically need a Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, or a related field, with expertise in electrochemistry and battery materials. Familiarity with laboratory techniques, analytical instruments (such as XRD, SEM, and electrochemical workstations), and data analysis software is crucial, along with experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective scientific communication are valuable soft skills for succeeding in multidisciplinary research environments. These competencies are essential for driving innovation, advancing battery technologies, and contributing to impactful scientific discoveries.

What are typical collaboration opportunities for a Postdoc in battery research within an academic or industrial setting?

As a Postdoc in battery research, you will frequently collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including chemists, materials scientists, engineers, and data analysts. In academic settings, you may work closely with graduate students and faculty members, while in industry, you might partner with R&D teams, product engineers, and external research institutions. These collaborations are essential for advancing complex projects, sharing expertise, and accessing specialized equipment. Effective communication and teamwork skills are highly valued as you contribute to joint experiments, publications, and grant proposals.

What is the difference between Postdoc Battery vs Postdoc Materials Science?

Postdoc Battery positions specifically focus on advancing battery technologies, including electrochemistry and energy storage. In contrast, Postdoc Materials Science covers a wider range of material properties and applications, not limited to batteries. Both roles require a PhD in related fields and often share similar work environments and employers, but their research focus differs significantly.

What are Postdoc Battery positions?

Postdoc Battery positions are research-focused roles typically held by individuals who have recently earned their PhD and are specializing in battery technology or electrochemistry. These positions are usually temporary, lasting from one to three years, and are intended to further develop the research skills and expertise of the postdoctoral researcher. Postdocs in battery research work on projects related to the development, characterization, and improvement of batteries, often in academic, government, or industry laboratories. Their work can involve material synthesis, cell assembly, performance testing, and data analysis. The goal is to contribute to advancements in battery performance, safety, and sustainability.

Job description

The Separations and Bioprocessing group in the Applied Materials Division (AMD) at Argonne National Laboratory has an opening for a postdoctoral appointee. This position will involve developing and scaling cost-effective methods for separating and converting materials using mechanical and hydrometallurgical techniques. The researcher may also work with companies to research and validate unique lithium-ion battery recycling processes. This will require innovative approaches to solve challenges that go beyond the use of pilot scale or commercialized equipment. As such we are seeking candidates that have demonstrated the ability to design and build their own experimental apparatus to solve challenges. The position will require flexibility and a willingness to learn new techniques and approaches. The postdoctoral appointee will have the opportunity to work on projects that focus on improving Li-ion battery, critical materials supply chains, and other concepts.

Position Requirements

  • Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (typically completed within the last 0-5 years)in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science (those with other degrees but have similar skills to those listed will be considered).

  • Skilled oral and written communication skills.

  • Proven track record showing the ability to carry out independent and collaborative research in a multidisciplinary team while meeting project deliverables and milestones.

  • Highly self-motivated candidate who demonstrates creative and proactive approaches towards scientific problem solving as evidenced by publications and recommendations.

  • Skilled in installing, modifying, and maintaining equipment.

  • Willingness to enforce and abide by safety rules.

  • Ability to work with large volumes of hazardous chemicals.

  • Flexibility to change projects and work on a variety of projects simultaneously.

  • Knowledge in the following areas and techniques is desirable mechanical separations, materials characterization including tomography, coin cell fabrication and testing, running reactors, leaching, precipitation, recycling, mineral processing and liquid-liquid separations.

  • Ability to model Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

  • This position requires an on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois, five days per week.
