What are some common challenges faced by Post Doctoral Fellows when transitioning to independent research roles?

Post Doctoral Fellows often encounter challenges such as balancing the demands of publishing, securing research funding, and building a professional network. Navigating the transition to more independent research roles also requires developing strong project management and leadership skills, as fellows may begin supervising students or coordinating collaborative projects. Additionally, there can be uncertainty around career paths, so proactively seeking mentorship and professional development opportunities is crucial for long-term success.

What Is a Post Doctoral Fellow?

A post-doctoral fellow is someone who has recently earned their doctorate and has taken on the temporary role of a research scholar. The goal of the fellowship is to gain skills and experience that are needed to further their career. Depending on the field, fellowship research may be done under the supervision of a professor, similar to an independent study course, or conducted in a laboratory or clinical setting. Job duties include conducting in-depth research on the career they intend to pursue, documenting the findings of their research, and presenting these studies at the conclusion of the study.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Post Doctoral Fellow, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Post Doctoral Fellow, you typically need a doctoral degree in a relevant field, strong research skills, and a track record of academic publications. Familiarity with specialized research methodologies, data analysis software (such as SPSS, R, or MATLAB), and sometimes grant-writing or laboratory management systems is often required. Outstanding critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills help you excel in interdisciplinary research environments and present findings effectively. These skills and qualifications are crucial for advancing scientific knowledge, contributing to research projects, and building a foundation for an academic or research-focused career.

What is the difference between Post Doctoral Fellow vs Research Scientist?

Post Doctoral Fellows typically work in academic or research institutions focusing on specialized research projects after earning a PhD. Research Scientists are employed mainly in industry or corporate R&D, applying research to product development. While both roles involve research skills and advanced degrees, their work environments and career paths differ significantly.

What is a Post Doctoral Fellow?

A Post Doctoral Fellow, often called a postdoc, is a person who has completed their doctoral studies (Ph.D. or equivalent) and is engaged in further academic or professional research. Postdoctoral positions are typically temporary and provide additional training, research experience, and opportunities to publish scholarly work. The goal is to deepen expertise in a specific field, often under the guidance of a senior researcher or professor, and to prepare for more permanent roles in academia, industry, or government. Postdocs frequently contribute to ongoing research projects, mentor students, and may help secure research funding.

Job description

University of Colorado Anschutz
Department: SOM, Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics
Job Title: Post-Doctoral Fellow
Position #:00844925 - Requisition #:38914
Job Summary:
The Zyla Lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics is seeking a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Fellow to join a newly established research program focused on the structural dynamics of molecular machines. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the scientific direction of a growing lab at the interface of structural biology, biophysics, and virology, while contributing to cutting-edge research with broad implications for human health and therapeutic design.
The Post-Doctoral Fellow will lead independent projects exploring transient and dynamic protein states using techniques such as cryo-electron microscopy, tomography, kinetic assays, and computational analysis. Day-to-day work will include experimental design, data collection and interpretation, close collaboration with the PI and lab members, and mentoring junior researchers. This role offers substantial intellectual freedom, opportunities for publication and grant development, and direct impact on the department's research mission.
Key Responsibilities:
• Design and lead independent research projects aligned with the lab's focus on structural dynamics and molecular mechanism
• Apply and further develop expertise in cryo-EM, cryo-ET, biophysical assays, or complementary computational approache
• Analyze, interpret, and synthesize complex datasets into clear scientific conclusion
• Mentor graduate students, research services professionals, and trainees in experimental and analytical technique
• Contribute to manuscript preparation, grant applications, and scientific presentation
• Collaborate within the lab and with departmental, campus, and external research partner
• Support the establishment of best practices for reproducible and rigorous research in a new lab environment
Work Location:
Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.
Why Join Us:
Our department conducts research across a wide biological scale for fundamental scientific understanding with applications to many disease contexts. The overarching goal is to reach a level of molecular insight that helps develop therapeutic approaches to disease.
As biochemists and molecular geneticists, we are amid an unprecedented time of discovery - our conception of the molecular biology of cells is going from the equivalent of grainy black-and-white to high-resolution technicolor. From deciphering the choreography of transcription complexes, chromosomes, and RNA molecules within cells to developing novel approaches to 3D molecular structure determination to understanding how viruses hijack a cell's machinery and alter its metabolome, the researchers in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics (BMG) are at the forefronts of their fields both conceptually and technologically.
