Overview
The Women's Health RN provides comprehensive, patient-centered care to women and newborns setting. This role is responsible for supporting the patient throughout labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum care while collaborating with an interdisciplinary team. The RN utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care, ensuring optimal patient outcomes and maintaining a safe environment.
Responsibilities
Patient Assessment & Care
  • Facilitates, implements, and evaluates individualized patient care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Performs and documents thorough patient assessments within required timeframes at admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Evaluates lab and diagnostic results; reports critical findings immediately to appropriate providers.
  • Assesses and protects patient safety through adherence to hospital policies and unit procedures.
  • Provides patient-centered care focused on physical, emotional, and educational needs of mother and newborn.

Education & Documentation
  • Assesses patient and family educational needs and provides ongoing instruction throughout hospital stay.
  • Documents teaching performed and modifies care plans as patient needs evolve.
  • Ensures accurate, timely medical record documentation, including order transcription.

Prioritization & Collaboration
  • Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to prioritize care based on the needs of mothers, newborns, and unit acuity.
  • Collaborates effectively with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesia, neonatology providers, and support staff.

Specimen Collection & Lab Responsibilities
  • Collects correct blood/urine specimens using proper technique and equipment.
  • Ensures proper labeling, processing, and transport of specimens to the lab or designated courier services.

Technical and Clinical Skills
  • Demonstrates competency in equipment and procedures used in labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum care.
  • Participates in newborn care immediately following delivery and supports early initiation of breastfeeding or parent bonding.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to obstetric and neonatal emergencies.

Professional Expectations
  • Demonstrates accountability, integrity, and professionalism in all patient interactions.
  • Promotes a healing, family-centered environment and advocates for patient rights and preferences.
