To thrive as a Political Intern, you generally need strong research, writing, and organizational skills, supported by coursework or experience in political science, public policy, or related fields. Familiarity with office productivity software, social media platforms, and legislative tracking tools is often required. Excellent communication, professionalism, and a proactive attitude are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for effectively supporting political staff, managing information, and contributing to a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

What are some typical projects or tasks I might work on during a political internship?

As a political intern, you may be involved in a variety of tasks such as conducting policy research, drafting memos, assisting with event planning, managing correspondence, and supporting social media outreach. The specific projects can vary depending on whether you intern for a governmental office, advocacy group, or campaign, but you will generally gain a well-rounded understanding of political processes and office operations.

What is the difference between Political Internship vs Political Campaign Staff?

AspectPolitical InternshipPolitical Campaign Staff
Required CredentialsTypically students or recent graduates, some knowledge of politicsVaries; often experienced, with specific campaign skills
Work EnvironmentEducational, volunteer-based, or part-timeFast-paced, full-time during campaigns
Employer & Industry UsageGovernment offices, NGOs, political parties, universitiesPolitical campaigns, consulting firms, party organizations

Political internships are usually entry-level, educational roles for students or recent graduates gaining exposure to politics. In contrast, political campaign staff are more experienced professionals working full-time during campaigns. While internships focus on learning and support, campaign staff handle strategic tasks. Both roles are vital in the political industry but differ in experience level, responsibilities, and work intensity.

What is a political internship?

A political internship is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience working in politics, such as for a government office, political campaign, nonprofit, or advocacy group. Interns typically assist with research, event planning, communications, and administrative tasks, and may have opportunities to attend meetings or interact with elected officials. The primary goal is to provide practical exposure to the inner workings of the political process and help interns build valuable professional networks and skills for future careers in politics or related fields.
