What does a political data analyst do?

A remote Political Data Analyst collects, processes, and interprets political data to help organizations, campaigns, or government agencies make informed decisions from a remote location. Their work typically involves analyzing voter demographics, election results, polling data, and social media trends to identify patterns and predict outcomes. They use statistical software and data visualization tools to present their findings clearly, often supporting campaign strategy or policy development. Working remotely, they collaborate with team members through digital communication tools and manage data securely online.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a political data analyst?

To thrive as a Political Data Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, expertise in statistics, and a background in political science or a related field. Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Python, R, SQL, and data visualization platforms like Tableau is typically required. Attention to detail, clear communication, and the ability to interpret complex data for diverse audiences are essential soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate insights, effective reporting, and impactful decision-making in the fast-paced and data-driven world of political campaigns or policy analysis.

What are the typical challenges faced by remote political data analysts when collaborating with campaign teams?

Remote Political Data Analysts often encounter challenges in maintaining seamless communication with campaign teams, especially when working across different time zones or with teams unfamiliar with data-driven decision-making. Building strong relationships remotely requires proactive communication, clear documentation, and regular virtual meetings to ensure alignment on goals and data needs. Analysts must also be adept at using collaboration tools and presenting complex findings in accessible ways to help campaign staff act on insights efficiently.

Job description

Organization OverviewAmerica Votes works with over 400 state and national partner organizations to advance progressive policies, win elections, and protect every American's right to vote. Since 2003, America Votes has been the common link between many of the largest and most influential issue and membership organizations in the country, serving as the coordination hub of the progressive community. America Votes' work has brought together a wide range of causes and built a unified coalition that has transformed how the progressive community works. Together, they have engaged communities across the country to take action on critical issues – from fighting for working families, defending reproductive rights, protecting the environment, and more – and mobilized millions of voters. America Votes works year-round nationally and in more than 20 states, acting as a permanent campaign to continually advance progressive causes, modernize elections, and win elections. America Votes provides a range of services to partners, including strategic planning, advocacy and electoral campaign coordination, data tools and targeting services, and on-the-ground leadership in key states. America Votes also works to improve election systems and fight back against efforts to suppress voters, taking the lead throughout their state network to coordinate and execute advocacy campaigns with allies to reform elections and modernize the voting process.  Racial Equity StatementAs a leader of collaborative efforts to mobilize voters, protect voting rights, and win elections, America Votes is committed to advancing racial equity within our organization and across our coalition. We acknowledge the systematic racism that permeates all facets of our society, beginning with the foundational right to vote. America Votes is also engaging with an understanding of the ways gender, sexuality and other forms of oppression intersect with race and how those relationships impact inequities faced by our staff, our partners, and the communities that we engage in our work. America Votes strives to model our commitment to racial equity through our internal and external operations, programs, and partnerships. We acknowledge the inequitable structures that continue to exist and are moving forward with a sustained commitment in time, resources and people to challenge structural racism and work towards creating a reflective organization and democracy.Position DescriptionAmerica Votes is looking for a Data Analyst to find and communicate insights to improve our voter contact programs, win elections, and drive progressive change. The ideal candidate is excited about talking to staff across teams to understand their needs and questions, then creating dashboards, graphs, memos and slide decks to share answers. In particular, we're looking for someone with past political experience who loves the work we do supporting states, understands both the data and the program context, and can turn data into not just reports, but recommendations. This is a permanent, full-time bargaining unit position that reports to the Analytics Director. ResponsibilitiesDashboards and Reporting: Create reports used by AV staff and partners to make programmatic and strategy decisions; use reports and other tools to proactively highlight trends and insights that inform AV and partner programs. Analysis and Writing: Collaborate with internal program staff to translate their needs into analytics questions, investigate those questions using SQL queries and other tools, then communicate your findings in clear, accessible, and actionable ways. Continuous Learning: Stay up to date with research and best practices from across the political data space, continually grow your own analytics knowledge, and help national and state staff incorporate new methods into our analysis work. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Must HavesPolitical experience – At least one cycle of data experience at a political campaign or at a progressive organization, including working with voter files and voter contact data.Strong SQL skills - you should have worked in a cloud data warehouse environment before, be comfortable writing queries with complex joins and aggregate functions, and care about writing clean and well-documented code. Experience gleaning actionable insights from data - you should be able to dig into data quickly, turn your investigations into recommendations, and communicate the results in presentations, graphs, and written memos. Experience creating dashboards - we use Google Data Studio and Hex, but we are platform agnostic for this role; we care that you understand how to communicate clearly in a dashboard, not necessarily that you have used a particular platform before. A service-oriented approach to data work that prioritizes collaboration, supporting staff and partners, and building products that center and advance racial equity.Strong interpersonal skills and a professional approach to communicating with team members, partners, and vendors. Nice to HavesExperience with Voter Registration, especially site-based programs using BLOCKs. More advanced technical skills, including advanced SQL skills, coding in R or Python, or experience using dbt (data build tool) for data transformations. More advanced knowledge of analytics and statistical methods such as regressions, predictive modeling, or time series analysis.Experience with additional political data sets such as Census data, FEC reports, DDx, and digital or TV advertising data.Past experience as a political organizer or field staffer. Hiring ProcessHiring Manager Resume ReviewInitial Hiring Manager Interview (30 min)Technical Assessment (done on own time, 4 hours) Final Interview with Hiring Manager and Data Team Members (45 minutes)Reference Check How you'll ramp30 days: Get an overview of our data stack and our existing reports; meet the data and program staff you'll be working with and learn more about the partners we support. 45 days: Take ownership of a report or analysis from end-to-end – understanding the request, creating an analysis plan, and then building a dashboard or writing a memo. 60 days: Step into your role as the go-to person for questions on specific reports and programs; proactively dig into program data and flag changes or warning signs.  LocationThis is a remote position, with a sight preference for someone based in DC.
