Job description

The Role

City & State is seeking an enterprising, hungry, early career reporter to cover New York City politics as a member of our award-winning City Hall bureau and to take on the daybreak task of compiling our flagship First Read newsletter. This position is a dream job if you are a journalist with a passion for political gossip and a drive to get the story first. Youโ€™ll get to refine both your magazine writing and ability to turn around quick, breaking news hits. Youโ€™ll be reporting from inside City Hall on the behind-the-scenes dealmaking of the City Council and Mayor Zohran Mamdaniโ€™s administration, tracking how New York City functions โ€“ or doesnโ€™t โ€“ and the personalities vying for power in a city watched by the whole world.

The ideal applicant is a dogged news-chaser and an enthusiastic team player who shows meticulous dedication to getting the facts right. City & State has launched many of New York Cityโ€™s top journalists. You could be the next.

Responsibilities

  • Compile the First Read newsletter every morning from 4:30 a.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Turn around quick hits and daily stories about the dynamics of the New York City Council, the mayoral administration and elections
  • Pitch and write 1-2 in-depth magazine stories on New York City politics and policy each month

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated curiosity about the New York City political landscape
  • Meticulous fact-checking skills
  • Dedication to the craft of writing
  • 1-2 years experience covering political news in New York is a plus
  • Residency in New York City area

The compensation range for this role is $66,500 to $72,000 per year.
