About our Department The Glendale Police Department proudly serves this dynamic community with a team of 458 sworn officers and 166 professional staff. Our agency operates across three bureaus and six divisions - Administrative Services, Special Operations, Criminal Investigations, Support Services, Gateway Patrol, and Foothills Patrol - working around the clock to keep Glendale safe. About your Impact Performs work related to receiving, storing, issuing and disposing of personal and non-personal property impounded following City, State and Federal requirements.

Receives impounded property and evidence from police personnel; Releases property and evidence to designated personnel following prescribed procedures. Sorts, separates, and files impounded property and evidence.

Performs physical inventories of: Cash, weapons, jewelry, drugs, and other types of property and evidence. Maintains logs of all property and evidence stored. Releases evidence for court purposes and laboratory analysis.

Makes accurate comparisons of articles from serial numbers and/or other descriptive features to identify evidence and property; searches relevant computer databases to identify property. Attempts to locate owners of property and return property to owner. Maintains and secures property/evidence within the property warehouse.

Collects, produces, and maintains written documents. Maintains computer records on the disposition of evidence and other impounded property. Destroys and/or disposes of evidence and property upon authorization of the courts or other authorized parties.

Transports property and evidence from off-site locations to the central warehousing facility; Transports evidence to crime laboratories for analysis. Trains department personnel in proper packaging of evidence and the use of the property facilities and equipment. Operates city vehicles; Operates a forklift, scissor lift, pallet jacks and other equipment to move impounded property.

Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success Factors One year experience in police work, inventory maintenance, or a related field. Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education. Knowledge of General police procedures for impounding and safekeeping of evidence and property. Applicable Federal, State, and Local: criminal and civil laws, and regulations.

Basic principles, practices and methods of warehousing. Criminal rules of evidence pertaining to property. Property release procedures.

Record keeping procedures. Firearms handling and safety procedures. Hazards and safety precautions applicable to warehousing and public safety evidence.

Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in motor vehicle operation. Microsoft Office products and other relevant technologies. Ability to Understand and carefully follow handling, retrieval and disposal procedures.

Implement storage, security and accounting procedures for items of a sensitive nature and/or valuable impounded property. Comprehend and make inferences from written material. Learn job related material through observation and oral instructions.

Work with sensitive evidence and exercise discretion. Verify information by checking: tags, boxes and bags. Evaluate a situation, make effective decisions, and take appropriate action.

Safeguard the transport of evidence. Operate the department computerized data entry and retrieval system. Operate the state ACJIS computer system.

Operates and interprets information from the JWI criminal database. Operate various record management systems. Ability to research reports to determine disposition of evidentiary items.

Handle evidence safely while protecting its integrity. Organize and track a large, varied inventory. Maintain accurate logs and records using computerized equipment.

Listen, communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of people. Proficiently perform computerized word processing, comprehension, summarizing and writing/editing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public employees.

Complete OSHA/Safety training as required. Operate city vehicles. Perform other duties as assigned.

Special Requirements Valid Arizona driver's license. Must obtain and maintain State Terminal Operator Certification Level B within one year of hire. Must complete a valid Forklift Operator Training Program within six months of hire or promotion.

Must complete a valid Scissor Lift Operator Training Program within six months of hire or promotion. Must complete valid Auto Lift Operating Training program within six months of hire or promotion. Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required.

This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions Most work is performed in a warehouse or City office environment. Perform manual work that requires bending, stooping, and moving heavy objects short and long distances; climb ladders and steps to reach objects; lift arms above shoulder level Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Prepare boxed items; move, lift, store and retrieve evidence and property. Enters, exits, and operates city vehicles and equipment. Travel to/from various locations.

Handle firearms and other dangerous weapons. Use protective equipment when handling property. Exposure to dust, noise, inclement weather, temperature extremes, contaminated blood and property, and unpleasant orders.

Work with evidence contaminated with: body fluids, chemicals, pesticides, paints, insecticides, flammables, explosives, and other hazardous materials using normal protective equipment. Deals with irate and hostile members of the public. Operate a variety of standard office equipment including computer, telephone, calculator, copy and fax machines requiring continuous and repetitive arm, hand and eye movement.
