2026 Salary Rates:
Start -- $40.70 hourly / $84,656 annual
After year 1 -- $43.96 hourly / $91,437 annual
After year 2 -- $47.20 hourly / $98,176 annual
After year 3 -- $50.45 hourly / $104,936 annual
After year 4 -- $54.26 hourly / $112,861 annual
The Metro Transit Police Department is one of the fastest growing agencies in the state due to the expansion of light rail and Rapid Transit Bus systems. What you would do in this job
As a Sworn Full-Time Metro Transit Police Officer, you will protect employees and passengers, and safeguard property and equipment of Metro Transit across all municipalities of our eight county Metro-wide system. You will patrol assigned areas in a squad car, on foot, or onboard public transit and perform visual inspections and recognize, respond, investigate, and enforce violations of laws and ordinances.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
  • An associate degree in Law Enforcement from an accredited College or University AND must currently be MN Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) licensed or eligible to be POST licensed as a full-time peace officer in the State of Minnesota by the time of conditional offer. Note: A conditional offer is only extended after the background is complete. Verification of eligibility for license must be available by this time.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
FT Officers are eligible for up to a $4,000 hiring bonus:
  • $1,000 after successful completion of the Academy
  • $1,000 after completion of FTO, and
  • $2,000 after successfully completing a probationary period.

To be eligible for a Lateral Officer you:
  • Must currently be employed full-time in a sworn position by a law enforcement agency.
  • Must have at least 18 months of continuous experience in a sworn position (must be immediately preceding employment with Metro Transit to be eligible for the hiring bonus).
  • An associate degree in Law Enforcement from an accredited College or University AND must currently be MN Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) licensed.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Lateral Officers are eligible for an $8,000 hiring bonus.
  • $4,000 upon successful completion of (6) six months of employment.
  • $4,000 upon successful completion of (12) twelve months of employment.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):
  • Bachelor's degree in law enforcement from an accredited College or University
  • Conversational in a second language other than English

SELECTION PROCESS:

  3. Subject Matter Expert Review
  4. Background Check - Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Metro Transit Police Department.
  5. Psychological Evaluation - After passing the background check, a conditional offer of employment may be extended. All candidates must be recommended for hire based on the psychological evaluation.
  6. Medical Examination / Work Performance Test / Drug test - Candidates must successfully pass the medical examination, work performance and pre-employment drug screen.

Criminal Background Checks:
Convictions are not an automatic disqualification from the selection process and must fall within Minnesota State Statute 6700.0700.
