Job description

Police Dispatcher

Basic Responsibilities: Receive incoming emergency calls and dispatch emergency services, maintain proficiency in operation of all dispatch related computer database systems, monitor radio networks and relay messages when appropriate, input and access information into databases, maintain EMD certification, and maintain Communications files as required.

Previous Work Experience: Public safety dispatch or telecommunications experience preferred.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Special Skills & Training: Excellent typing skills, keyboard and basic computer knowledge. LEIN operator, EMD certified and CAD training preferred. Must possess outstanding communication skills while interacting with the public and be able to effectively communicate with citizens, police officers, and firefighters in crisis or stressful situations by both telephone and police/fire radio.

Start Date & Work Schedule: ASAP Scheduling is coordinated by shift, and employee must be flexible to potentially work any shift or any day of the week, based on the Communications Section Schedule. 40 hours per week minimum, with overtime as needed.

Pre-Employment Standards for Police Dispatcher:

  • File a properly completed application and personal history statement, which is acceptable to the City of Farmington Hills, and provide satisfactory responses to additional requests for information.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Emergency dispatching experience desirable, but not required.
  • Basic typing and ability to operate a computer.
  • Good communication and telephone skills.
  • Have no prior felony charges or convictions.
  • Have no prior criminal convictions which are punishable by more than one year in jail.
  • Have no misdemeanor charges or convictions within five years of the date of application. All misdemeanor charges and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility of applicant.
  • Pass a department-sponsored examination (CritiCall).
  • Pass the department's Oral Review Board.
  • Pass a department-conducted background investigation.
  • Pass a psychological examination administered at the direction of the department.
  • Pass all phases of a physical-medical examination.
  • An interview with the Police Chief and staff will be conducted, the results of which will be considered in the applicant's overall suitability for employment.

Hiring Process for Police Dispatcher:

  • During the announced application period, candidates shall complete the City of Farmington Hills Employment Application form and Personal History Statement.
  • The application form and Personal History Statement must be completed in its entirety and returned to the Human Resources Department at City Hall prior to the published deadline.
  • Examination (CritiCall).
  • Oral Board interview.
  • Background investigation.
  • Interview with Police Chief and staff.
  • Conditional offer of employment.
  • Medical-physical examination, to include hearing and vision tests.
  • Psychological evaluation.
  • Appointment to position.
