What is a platform manager?

A Platform Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the development, maintenance, and optimization of a specific technology platform within an organization. They coordinate between technical teams, stakeholders, and users to ensure the platform meets business needs and operates reliably. Platform Managers may also be involved in strategic planning, vendor management, and implementing new features or integrations. Their role is crucial for ensuring platforms are scalable, secure, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform manager?

To thrive as a Platform Manager, you need expertise in platform architecture, project management, and a solid understanding of business operations, often supported by a relevant degree or industry certification. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), API integrations, and product management tools like JIRA is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help drive cross-functional collaboration and strategic decision-making. These skills ensure the platform's stability, scalability, and alignment with business goals, which are critical for organizational success.

They facilitate regular communication between developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to identify potential bottlenecks, address incidents, and plan for future growth. By establishing clear processes for incident management, change control, and performance monitoring, Platform Managers help ensure that the platform remains reliable and scalable while meeting user needs. This collaborative approach not only strengthens the technical foundation but also fosters a culture of shared responsibility across departments.

Job description

Job Description
This is a Hybrid role in either our Delaware or Colorado locations.
SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) is becoming a foundational capability for Agilent's integrations, extensions, automation, data, and future digital solutions, with demand growing across ERP modernization, Global Trade Services modernization, process automation, and platform-based extension strategies. To support this, Agilent is establishing an SAP BTP Technical Lead to provide hands-on technical leadership and help define what an enterprise-scale BTP Center of Excellence (COE) looks like for the organization.
In this role, you will set technical direction, define standards and reusable patterns, establish reference architectures, and ensure security, compliance, and scalability across all BTP implementations. You will also act as a multiplier-mentoring internal resources, growing BTP skills, and enabling product and platform teams to adopt BTP in a consistent, governed way-so Agilent can build lasting internal capability, improve delivery speed and quality, and reduce long-term dependency on external vendors.
Key Responsibilities
BTP COE Leadership & Platform Strategy
  • Help establish and operationalize the SAP BTP Center of Excellence, including standards, reusable patterns, governance, and delivery guardrails.

  • Define the role of SAP BTP in Agilent's enterprise architecture, with primary support for S/4HANA and adjacent business platforms.

  • Develop reference architectures and development guardrails for extensions, integrations, workflow, eventing, data services, and AI-based solutions.

  • Partner with Enterprise Architecture, IT leadership, and delivery teams to align BTP investments with business priorities and modernization outcomes.

S/4HANA Extension & Clean Core Enablement
  • Lead the architecture and development approach for side-by-side extensions on BTP, aligned with SAP clean core principles.

  • Guide teams on when to use in-app versus side-by-side extensibility, and define pragmatic decision criteria.

  • Design compliant extension patterns that reduce core customizations and improve upgrade readiness for S/4 modernization programs.

  • Ensure BTP solutions are scalable, supportable, secure, and aligned with long-term S/4 and cloud operating models.

Solution Architecture & Hands-On Development Leadership
  • Lead end-to-end solution design and provide hands-on leadership across BTP services such as Integration Suite, Extension Suite, SAP Build, Event Mesh, and HANA Cloud.

  • Design and oversee integrations between SAP and non-SAP systems using API-led, event-driven, and hybrid integration patterns.

  • Support development teams with architecture reviews, code-quality expectations, reusable assets, and issue resolution.

  • Contribute directly to prototyping, complex development design, and troubleshooting to accelerate critical initiatives.

Integration, Data & Event-Driven Architecture
  • Define enterprise integration and eventing patterns using SAP Integration Suite, Event Mesh, APIs, and asynchronous architecture.

  • Partner with application and data teams to enable trusted data flows across S/4HANA, SAP applications, and surrounding platforms.

  • Guide architecture for operational reporting, data replication, side-car patterns, and BTP-based data services that support business outcomes.

  • Promote reuse, simplification, and maintainability across interfaces and integration services.

Platform Governance, Development Standards & Enablement
  • Establish BTP development standards, DevOps practices, transport/release processes, naming conventions, and environment management approaches.

  • Define review mechanisms for solution quality, security, extensibility, performance, and support readiness.

  • Build internal capability by mentoring developers, solution architects, and analysts on BTP initiatives.

  • Drive consistent documentation, knowledge transfer, and reusable asset creation as part of the COE model.

Innovation & Advanced Capabilities
  • Enable adoption of modern SAP capabilities on BTP, including workflow, forms, low-code/no-code tooling, AI services, automation, and business eventing.

  • Evaluate new BTP services and emerging SAP capabilities for fit within Agilent's architecture roadmap.

  • Support incubation of high-value solutions connected to S/4 and surrounding platforms, aligned with enterprise standards and support models.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related field.

  • 8+ years of experience in SAP architecture, design, and development.

  • 3+ years of recent, hands-on experience with SAP BTP (3-4 years preferred), including strong expertise across core services such as Integration Suite, Extension Suite, SAP Build, HANA Cloud, Event Mesh, and security/identity concepts.

  • Experience supporting S/4HANA transformation programs, especially in brownfield or hybrid modernization environments.

  • Solid understanding of clean core principles and SAP-recommended extensibility patterns for S/4HANA.

  • Proven experience designing and delivering SAP extensions and integrations for ERP or large-scale SAP landscapes.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with both executives and technical teams, translating strategy into implementable architecture and development direction.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)
  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline.

  • Experience defining architecture standards, technical guardrails, and reusable patterns across multiple teams.

  • Prior experience helping establish or lead a BTP Center of Excellence, platform team, or shared services model.

  • Strong development background in SAP-centric technologies such as CAP, Node.js, Java, SAPUI5/Fiori, APIs, event-driven patterns, and cloud-native design.

  • Experience with SAP Integration Suite patterns, including API management, Cloud Integration, and event-based integration.

  • Familiarity with SAP Build, workflow automation, business rules, and low-code/no-code enablement.

  • Experience integrating SAP with non-SAP enterprise platforms, data platforms, and external services.

  • Understanding of platform security, identity/authentication, environment strategy, transport management, and cloud operations.

  • Experience with AI-enabled or data-driven solutions on BTP.

  • Consulting background or experience across multiple enterprise transformation programs.

Success Profile
  • Operates as both a strategist and a hands-on technical leader.

  • Brings strong judgment on where BTP adds value versus where simpler alternatives are the better choice.

  • Balances speed, architecture discipline, and long-term maintainability.

  • Collaborates effectively across Enterprise Architecture, SAP delivery teams, infrastructure, security, and business stakeholders.

  • Helps Agilent scale BTP adoption in a disciplined way while accelerating S/4-aligned innovation and reducing dependence on core customization.
