What are some typical challenges plastic surgeons face when working as part of a multidisciplinary medical team?

Plastic surgeons often collaborate with specialists such as oncologists, orthopedic surgeons, and anesthesiologists, especially in reconstructive cases. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication and coordination of care plans, as each team member may have different priorities and approaches. Balancing aesthetic goals with functional outcomes also requires ongoing dialogue with both patients and colleagues. Developing strong interpersonal skills and adaptability helps plastic surgeons navigate these complex team dynamics effectively.

Common Search/ComparisonPlastic Surgery vs Dermatology

Plastic surgery focuses on reconstructive and cosmetic procedures involving the skin, tissues, and body structures, often requiring surgical expertise. Dermatology primarily deals with skin health, diseases, and non-invasive cosmetic treatments. While both fields involve skin-related procedures, plastic surgeons perform more invasive surgeries, whereas dermatologists focus on medical and minimally invasive cosmetic treatments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plastic surgeon, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plastic Surgeon, you need advanced surgical skills, a medical degree with board certification in plastic surgery, and a thorough understanding of human anatomy. Mastery of surgical instruments, imaging systems, and familiarity with the latest reconstructive and cosmetic techniques are essential. Attention to detail, strong communication, and empathy are crucial soft skills for understanding patient goals and ensuring satisfaction. These skills are vital for delivering safe, precise, and aesthetically pleasing results while maintaining patient trust and safety.

What are the qualifications to get a job in plastic surgery?

The qualifications and skills that you need to start a career in the plastic surgery industry depend on your career plans. Plastic surgeons are doctors who have developed skills in plastic surgery. To start this career, you first need to earn a medical degree and obtain a license to practice as a doctor. A doctor can specialize in plastic surgery during their postdoctoral training. Plastic surgery nurses need a nursing degree and license, and medical assistants need certification from the state in which they work.

What is plastic surgery?

Plastic surgery is a specialized branch of medicine focused on restoring, reconstructing, or altering the human body. It can be performed for cosmetic reasons, such as enhancing appearance, or for reconstructive purposes, such as repairing injuries, birth defects, or the effects of diseases. Plastic surgeons use surgical and non-surgical techniques to improve both function and aesthetics. Procedures range from facelifts and breast augmentation to reconstructive surgeries after trauma or cancer.

Job description

Surgical Physician Assistant (Plastic Surgery Center)

Maia Plastic Surgery — Tysons Corner (McLean), VA
Maia Plastic Surgery is opening a brand‐new surgical center inside our Tysons Corner office, and we’re hiring a Surgical Physician Assistant (PA-C) to be a cornerstone of our perioperative team. This role blends first-assist in the OR, pre‐/post‐operative care, and clinic support, with the unique opportunity to help stand up workflows and best practices for a modern, patient‐centered plastic surgery OBS. ***Experience in plastic surgery is required***

What you’ll do

Perioperative & OR (primary focus)

  • First-assist for aesthetic and reconstructive procedures (e.g., rhinoplasty, facelift/neck lift, breast augmentation/reduction, abdominoplasty, liposuction, body contouring), under attending supervision.
  • Perform sterile prep, draping, retraction, hemostasis, suturing/closure, and dressing application.
  • Manage intraoperative documentation and instrument counts; support turnover efficiency.

Pre‐op

  • Conduct comprehensive H&Ps, risk stratification, medication reconciliation, and informed‐consent education.
  • Coordinate labs, imaging, clearances, and pre‐op orders; optimize patients per ERAS‐style protocols.

Post‐op & Recovery

  • Monitor immediate recovery, pain control, PONV mitigation, and discharge readiness in accordance with ASC policies.
  • Perform wound checks, drain care, suture/staple removal, and routine post‐op visits; escalate findings appropriately.

Clinic & Team Operations

  • See consults and follow‐ups; deliver detailed education on procedures, recovery, and expectations.
  • Write notes, orders, and e‐prescriptions in the EMR; maintain accurate, compliant documentation (HIPAA/OSHA).
  • Partner with the surgeon and practice manager to refine ASC workflows (checklists, protocols, supply lists, QA/PI).

Qualifications

  • NCCPA‐certified Physician Assistant (PA‐C) with current or eligible Virginia license.
  • BLS and ACLS required (or obtained prior to start).
  • 1–3+ years of surgical PA experience preferred (plastics, ENT, dermatologic surgery, or general surgery helpful).
  • Demonstrated OR first‐assist proficiency and confident perioperative decision‐making.
  • Prescriptive authority/DEA eligibility in Virginia (for post‐op pain, antibiotics, etc.).
  • Comfort with EMR documentation and patient education; excellent communication and service mindset.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods; thrives in a fast‐paced, detail‐driven ASC.

Nice to have

  • Aesthetic practice exposure (e.g., scar management, lasers, skincare); injectable experience is a plus but not required.
  • Experience helping launch or optimize an ambulatory surgery center.

Schedule & location

  • Monday–Friday, clinic and OR days in our Tysons Corner (McLean), VA office.
  • Occasional early starts/late finishes based on case schedule; limited call as needed for post‐op questions.

What we offer

  • Competitive salary with bonus potential tied to ASC/clinic performance.
  • Health, dental, vision, PTO, paid holidays, and CME allowance.
  • Malpractice coverage; licensing/DEA support.
  • A hands‐on role shaping the operations and patient experience of a new, high‐end surgical center.

Compensation: Competitive and commensurate with experience ($125,000–$165,000 base + bonus).
Start date: ASAP (flexible).

How to apply

Please send your CV/resumé and a brief note about your OR experience and soonest start date to manager@maiaplasticsurgery.com with the subject line: “Surgical PA”.
