How much do plasmid jobs pay per hour?

As of May 30, 2026, the average hourly pay for plasmid in the United States is $33.68, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $27.64 and $41.35 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Plasmid Scientist, and why are they important?

To excel as a Plasmid Scientist, you need a solid background in molecular biology, genetics, and biochemistry, typically supported by a relevant degree (such as a BSc, MSc, or PhD) in life sciences. Experience with techniques like PCR, DNA cloning, gel electrophoresis, and proficiency in using laboratory information management systems (LIMS) are commonly required, along with familiarity with tools like CRISPR and plasmid design software. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and clear scientific communication skills are critical for success in this role. These skills ensure accurate plasmid construction, data integrity, and effective collaboration within research teams.

What are some common challenges faced by scientists working with plasmids in a laboratory setting?

Scientists handling plasmids often encounter challenges such as ensuring the purity and quality of plasmid DNA, optimizing transformation efficiency, and preventing contamination. Troubleshooting issues like low plasmid yield or unwanted mutations requires attention to protocol details and familiarity with molecular biology techniques. Collaborating closely with team members, such as research associates and lab technicians, is essential for coordinating experiments and sharing best practices, especially in high-throughput or collaborative research environments.

What are plasmids?

Plasmids are small, circular pieces of double-stranded DNA that exist independently of the chromosomal DNA in bacteria and some other cells. They often carry genes that provide beneficial traits, such as antibiotic resistance or the ability to metabolize unusual substances. Plasmids are widely used in genetic engineering and biotechnology as vectors to introduce foreign genes into host organisms. Their ability to replicate independently makes them valuable tools for cloning and gene expression studies.

What is the difference between Plasmid vs Molecular Biologist?

AspectPlasmidMolecular Biologist
Required CredentialsLaboratory skills, molecular biology knowledge, often a degree in biology or related fieldDegree in biology, biochemistry, or related field; often advanced degrees
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biotech companies, academic institutionsResearch labs, academic settings, biotech firms
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in genetic engineering, cloning, and researchConducts research, experiments, and data analysis in molecular biology

While a plasmid is a DNA molecule used as a tool in genetic engineering, a molecular biologist is a professional who studies biological processes at the molecular level. Both roles often work in research labs and require knowledge of molecular biology techniques, but plasmids are tools, whereas molecular biologists are researchers who utilize such tools to conduct experiments and advance scientific understanding.

Job description

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campu
Department: SOM, Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics
Job Title: Research Services Senior Professional
Position #00845155 - Requisition #38943
Job Summary:
The Zyla Lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics is seeking a highly motivated Research Services Senior Professional to join a newly established research program focused on the structural dynamics of molecular machines. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the scientific direction of a growing lab at the interface of structural biology, biophysics, and virology, while contributing to cutting-edge research with broad implications for human health and therapeutic design.
The Research Services Senior Professional will provide hands-on laboratory and research support, as well as administrative coordination to ensure smooth and efficient lab operations. Day-to-day work will include maintaining cell culture and laboratory reagents, supporting molecular biology workflows such as cloning and plasmid preparation, assisting with ordering and inventory management, and maintaining lab records and databases. The position will also support ongoing research projects by assisting other lab members with experimental work and data generation, with the opportunity to contribute to manuscripts based on their work.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide day-to-day laboratory support, including cell culture maintenance, plasmid preparation, cloning, and preparation of common lab reagents and stock
• Assist with research activities by supporting experimental workflows and collaborating with lab members on ongoing project
• Support administrative and operational tasks such as ordering supplies, maintaining inventories, and coordinating shipping and receiving
• Maintain accurate and organized lab documentation, including databases, plasmid libraries, and shared lab record
• Assist with experimental data collection, organization, and preliminary analysis as needed
• Contribute to the maintenance of a safe, organized, and efficient laboratory environment
• Collaborate effectively with the PI and lab members to support the overall research mission of the lab
Work Location:
Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO
Why Join Us:
Our department conducts research across a wide biological scale for fundamental scientific understanding with applications to many disease contexts. The overarching goal is to reach a level of molecular insight that helps develop therapeutic approaches to disease.
As biochemists and molecular geneticists, we are amid an unprecedented time of discovery - our conception of the molecular biology of cells is going from the equivalent of grainy black-and-white to high-resolution technicolor. From deciphering the choreography of transcription complexes, chromosomes, and RNA molecules within cells to developing novel approaches to 3D molecular structure determination to understanding how viruses hijack a cell's machinery and alter its metabolome, the researchers in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics (BMG) are at the forefronts of their fields both conceptually and technologically.
