What is a Plant Transformation job?

A Plant Transformation job involves genetically modifying plants by introducing new DNA to enhance traits such as disease resistance, yield, or stress tolerance. Professionals in this field use biotechnology techniques like Agrobacterium-mediated transformation or biolistics to alter plant genomes. Their responsibilities may include designing experiments, tissue culture work, and analyzing transformed plants. This role is critical in agricultural research, biotechnology companies, and academic institutions working on crop improvement and sustainability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Plant Transformation position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Plant Transformation, you need a strong background in plant biology, molecular biology, and genetic engineering, typically supported by a degree in a related field. Hands-on experience with plant tissue culture, Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, CRISPR/Cas gene editing, and analytical tools such as PCR and DNA sequencing is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team make candidates stand out. These capabilities are crucial for successfully developing genetically modified plants and advancing research in agricultural biotechnology.

What does a typical day look like for someone in a Plant Transformation role?

A typical day for a Plant Transformation specialist often involves preparing plant tissue cultures, conducting transformation experiments using various gene-editing techniques, and analyzing results using molecular biology assays. You may split your time between laboratory work and documenting findings, as well as troubleshooting protocols to improve transformation efficiency. Collaboration is common, as you'll work closely with researchers, lab technicians, and sometimes greenhouse staff to advance projects. This environment provides opportunities to learn new technologies and contribute to impactful developments in plant science.

Job description

Job Description

Are You Ready to Make It Happen at Our Manufacturing Network?

Join our mission to modernize how we make, pack, ship our products and collaborate with our supply chain partners. Bring data, automation, and AI to the shop floor.

The role will provide hands-on digital leadership across our six U.S. manufacturing plants - Chicago (IL), Naperville (IL) Richmond (VA), Portland (OR), Twin Falls (ID), and Indianapolis (IN) - currently operating with minimal digital tooling in the network and on the shop floor. The Senior Manager will identify the highest-value digitization opportunities from day one and convert them into working solutions using Power BI, Power Automate, Agentic AI, and the broader Microsoft and FMCG digital manufacturing stack.

Partnering closely with our Strategy & Transformation team, this leader will co-define and execute the multi-year digital roadmap for the plant network, while personally building dashboards, automating workflows, and coaching plant resources so that digital capability becomes embedded - not dependent on central support.

How you will contribute
You will:
Walk the floor at each of the six plants in the first 90 days to identify quick-win digitization opportunities across production, quality, maintenance, supply, and labor.
Co-develop and own the digital roadmap for the plant network jointly with the Strategy & Transformation team, sequencing initiatives by value, feasibility, and plant readiness.
Design, build, and deploy production-grade Power BI dashboards that give plant leaders real-time visibility into OEE, downtime, scrap, yield, labor, and cost variance.
Automate manual, paper-based, and spreadsheet-driven processes using Power Automate, Power Apps, and SharePoint to reduce administrative burden on plant teams.
Pilot and scale Agentic AI use cases (Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, and equivalent platforms) for shift handovers, root-cause analysis, document search, and operator assistance.
Establish the data foundation - connections to MES, ERP/SAP, CMMS, and historian systems - so analytics and AI initiatives can scale beyond one-off prototypes.
Define data governance, naming standards, security, and access controls in partnership with IT so that what is built at one plant is reusable across the network.
Coach and upskill plant resources (operations, quality, maintenance, planning) through hands-on workshops, citizen-developer training, and embedded pairing - so plants own and extend the tools after go-live.
Track and report business value delivered (cost, throughput, quality, safety) for every initiative on the roadmap, and course-correct quickly when value is not materializing.
Act as the digital voice into plant leadership meetings, S&OP, and capital planning, ensuring digital investments are tied to operational priorities.
Develop management reports and dashboards and share weekly with management including insights and recommended actions.
Mondelez International Internal
Facilitate weekly performance meetings with management with the right data and insights, working very closely with the plants.

What you will bring
A desire to drive your future and accelerate your career and the following experience and knowledge:
Deep, hands-on expertise with Power BI (DAX, data modeling), Power Automate, Power Apps, and the broader Microsoft Fabric / Azure data stack - you can build, not just direct.
Practical experience deploying AI and Agentic AI solutions (Copilot, Copilot Studio, LLM-based agents, RPA) in an operational or manufacturing setting.
Strong manufacturing data fluency - comfortable working with MES, SCADA/historian, SAP (PP, MM, PM), CMMS, and quality systems, and translating between IT and OT.
Proven track record of taking plants from low digital maturity to functioning analytics and automation, including the change management required to make it stick.
Excellent communication, coaching, and stakeholder skills - equally credible with a plant operator, a plant manager, and an executive sponsor.
Strong financial and business acumen with the discipline to prioritize work by value, not by technology novelty.

More about this role
What you need to know about this position:
This role supports digital transformation across our U.S. manufacturing network and is preferably based at one of our six plant locations: Chicago (IL), Richmond (VA), Portland (OR), Twin Falls (ID), or Indianapolis (IN). For exceptional candidates located elsewhere, we are open to a remote arrangement from the candidate's home location, with regular on-site presence at the plants.

What extra capabilities you will bring:
Comfort operating in environments with low digital maturity - meeting plants where they are, not where the tools assume they should be.
Ability to balance roadmap discipline with rapid prototyping; willing to ship a useful v1 before perfecting v3.
Strong influencing skills in a union and multi-site environment, without direct authority over plant resources.
Bias for teaching: every solution should leave behind a more capable plant team.

Education / Certifications:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field required. Master's degree, MBA, or certifications in Power BI, Azure Data, AI/ML, Six Sigma, or Lean are a plus.

Job specific requirements:
7+ years of progressive experience in data analytics, digital transformation, or digital manufacturing, with at least 3 years in an FMCG, CPG, or process manufacturing environment.
Demonstrated delivery of Power BI dashboards, Power Automate / Power Apps solutions, and at least one production AI or Agentic AI use case.
Experience defining and executing a multi-plant or multi-site digital roadmap, ideally in partnership with a Strategy or Transformation function.
Working knowledge of SAP (PP, MM, PM), MES, and CMMS data structures.
Familiarity with data governance, cybersecurity considerations in OT environments, and food safety / GMP regulatory context (FDA, OSHA).
Strong written and verbal communication in English.

Travel requirements:
Regular travel to the six U.S. manufacturing sites is expected. Approximately 40-50% travel for candidates based at a plant; up to 60% for candidates working remotely from outside a plant location.

Salary and Benefits:The base salary range for this position is $140,300 to $192,940; the exact salary depends on several factors such as experience, skills, education and location. In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for participation in a highly competitive bonus program with possibility for overachievement based on performance and company results. In addition, Mondelez International offers the following benefits: health insurance, wellness and family support programs, life and disability insurance, retirement savings plans, paid leave programs, education related programs, paid holidays and vacation time. Some of these benefits have eligibility requirements. Many of these benefits are subsidized or fully paid for by the company. No Relocation support availableBusiness Unit Summary
