What does a planning director do?

A Planning Director oversees the development and implementation of plans and policies related to land use, urban development, and community growth. They manage planning departments, coordinate with government officials, developers, and the public, and guide comprehensive planning efforts. Additionally, they ensure that development projects comply with zoning laws and environmental regulations, and often lead public meetings to gather community input. Their role is essential in shaping the way cities and communities evolve over time.

How does a planning director typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive project success?

As a Planning Director, you will work closely with departments such as design, engineering, marketing, and finance to ensure projects align with both strategic goals and operational constraints. Regular meetings, clear communication, and strong leadership are essential, as you will often mediate between competing priorities and facilitate consensus. Building strong relationships and understanding each team's needs allows you to create realistic timelines and allocate resources effectively, which is critical for delivering successful outcomes. This collaborative environment also offers opportunities to mentor team members and influence organizational strategy.

Job description

Title: Capital Projects & Planning Director

Position Type: Administrator Full Time

College: Front Range Community College

Division: Operations

Department: FRCC Facilities

Campus: Westminster Campus

Location: Westminster

Salary Range:$104,824 - $110,065 annually

Who We Are:

With three campuses along Coloradoโ€™s Front Range, FRCC is the stateโ€™s largest community college. We enroll close to 28,000 students annually from our diverse service area, which offers a variety of cultural and recreational activities.

Each year approximately 5,000 FRCC students transfer to four-year universities and FRCC offers more than 36 career training programs that prepare students for immediate employment and rewarding careers. Last year, more than 5,000 high school students took concurrent enrollment classes with us, earning college credit without having to pay college tuition. And we were recently ranked as one of the โ€œTop Online Collegesโ€ in the country by Newsweek.

One of FRCCโ€™s main goals is to offer educational excellence for everyone. The collegeโ€™s strong commitment to student success means we start by creating an inclusive and equitable environmentโ€”one where both students and employees feel they belong and are supported. FRCCโ€™s focus on diversity, equity and inclusion is woven into the fabric of our college conversations and decision-making processes. We are actively seeking to hire a workforce that reflects the diversity of our student body.

The college is also an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution. For us, becoming an HSI is an intentional commitment to being a college where our Latinx (and other historically marginalized) students thrive.

FRCC employees and leaders work hard to create a culture of collaboration, innovation and pride. Weโ€™re looking to hire people who share these valuesโ€”along with our commitment to student success, equity and excellence.
