What are PIV cards?

PIV cards, or Personal Identity Verification cards, are secure identification cards issued by the U.S. federal government to its employees and contractors. These smart cards are used to authenticate the holder’s identity for physical access to government facilities and logical access to computer networks and systems. PIV cards contain a microchip that stores the cardholder's credentials, including digital certificates and biometric data, ensuring secure and reliable verification. They are a key part of federal efforts to enhance security and comply with government standards like FIPS 201.

Familiarity with HSPD-12 requirements, smart card management systems, and tools like ActivID or Entrust are essential, along with any necessary government security clearances. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong interpersonal communication are crucial soft skills for managing sensitive information and assisting users. These skills ensure secure and efficient issuance and management of credentials vital for federal facility and information system access.
