How much do piping engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for piping engineer in the United States is $138,562.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $103,000.00 and $161,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the most common challenges faced by piping engineers during large-scale industrial projects?

Piping Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple disciplines (like structural, process, and instrumentation teams), managing changes in project scope, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards. Tight project timelines and working with complex 3D modeling software can also pose difficulties, especially when integrating new designs with existing infrastructure. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential to address these challenges and deliver successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a piping engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Piping Engineer, you typically need a degree in mechanical or chemical engineering, strong knowledge of piping design codes, and experience with project specifications. Proficiency in software such as AutoCAD, PDMS, or CAESAR II, along with familiarity with industry standards like ASME, is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication skills help engineers collaborate on complex projects and solve design challenges. These skills are essential to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective piping systems in industrial environments.

What is the difference between Piping Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectPiping EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical/Civil Engineering, certifications like ASME or APIBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, similar certifications
Work EnvironmentOil & gas, petrochemical, power plants, construction sitesManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, industrial facilities
Job FocusDesign, analysis, and maintenance of piping systemsDesign, analysis, and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment

While both roles require engineering degrees and similar certifications, Piping Engineers specialize in piping systems within industries like oil and gas, whereas Mechanical Engineers have a broader focus on mechanical systems across various sectors. The choice depends on your specific interest in piping versus general mechanical design.

What is a piping engineer?

Piping engineers design and supervise the building of piping systems that transport gas, oil, water, or sewage. Job duties include surveying work sites and evaluating environmental stress, determining project scope and cost, drafting layout plans and blueprints, and selecting materials for pipes and components for the construction of piping systems. Piping engineers typically use Computer Assisted Design (CAD) software to draft blueprints. In addition to technical and drafting skills, they also need strong project management skills to run projects efficiently from start to finish.

Position Summary
The Senior Piping Engineer will provide technical leadership for piping engineering scope supporting a new nuclear fuel facility. This role will focus on high-temperature piping systems, piping specifications, routing, anchoring, supports, stress considerations, constructability, and integration with process equipment, hot cells, building systems, and facility utilities.
The position requires a senior piping engineer capable of leading design reviews, resolving complex piping issues, coordinating with designers and engineers, and ensuring piping systems are safe, maintainable, operable, and aligned with nuclear, chemical, DOE, or high-hazard facility requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Lead piping engineering design activities for process piping, high-temperature piping, utility piping, specialty systems, and facility piping interfaces.
  • Develop, review, and approve piping specifications, piping classes, line lists, tie-in requirements, routing concepts, support strategies, anchoring approaches, and technical calculations.
  • Evaluate high-temperature piping behavior, expansion, flexibility, anchoring, guides, supports, equipment loads, routing constraints, and maintainability requirements.
  • Review piping layouts, isometrics, support details, stress analysis inputs, material selections, valve requirements, penetration details, and vendor documentation.
  • Coordinate piping design with process, mechanical, I&C, HVAC, electrical, civil/structural, safety basis, radiological controls, quality, construction, and operations teams.
  • Support design reviews, constructability reviews, hazard reviews, field walkdowns, procurement activities, construction issue resolution, testing, startup, and commissioning.
  • Provide technical direction to piping designers and engineers while maintaining configuration control, quality, and schedule alignment.
  • Prepare engineering dispositions, technical evaluations, design change packages, and clear recommendations for project leadership.

Requirements
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of piping engineering experience supporting nuclear, DOE, chemical, high-temperature, high-hazard, process, or highly regulated industrial facilities.
  • Strong experience with high-temperature piping, piping specifications, routing, anchoring, supports, piping materials, and piping design coordination.
  • Knowledge of piping codes, pressure boundary requirements, stress considerations, thermal expansion, equipment interfaces, constructability, and configuration control.
  • Ability to review P&IDs, piping layouts, isometrics, support drawings, specifications, vendor submittals, and field conditions.
  • Strong technical leadership, communication, review, issue-resolution, and cross-discipline coordination skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required site access, training, and security clearances.
  • Due to the nature of the government contract requirements and/or clearances requirements, US citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with hot cells, gloveboxes, GTS, nuclear fuel facilities, uranium processing, chemical processing, or radiological facility piping.
  • Experience with ASME B31.3, ASME Section III interfaces, nuclear quality requirements, pipe stress analysis, or seismic design considerations.
  • Professional Engineer license or advanced piping/stress analysis experience.
  • Active DOE L or Q clearance.

Education and Experience
