Job description

Reports to: Owner/CEO Location: 4000 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA (Temescal) — on-site Status: Full-time, exempt

About the Role

Pickle Athletics is looking for a General Manager to own the day-to-day operation of the club, top to bottom. This is the senior operator on-site: responsible for the club's financial performance (full P&L), the member experience, staffing, private events, and programming. The goal of this hire is to give ownership the ability to step back from daily operations with full confidence that the club is being run well in their absence.

This is a hands‑on role for someone who wants real ownership, not just a task list. You'll set the tone for the member experience, build and manage a team, and be accountable for the numbers.

Key Responsibilities Business & Financial Management (P&L Ownership)
  • Own the club's P&L — revenue, expenses, and profitability against budget
  • Build and manage the annual operating budget in partnership with ownership
  • Review financial reports (GoTab, CourtReserve, QuickBooks) regularly and course‑correct as needed
  • Source new vendors/suppliers as needed and manage existing vendor relationships
  • Audit unpaid account fees and ensure dues are collected
  • Approve and prorate membership punches based on policy
  • Optimize court utilization to maximize revenue
Membership Experience & Growth
  • Own the member experience end‑to‑end, from first inquiry through renewal
  • Drive membership growth and retention
  • Send member welcome emails; manage pauses/cancellations
  • Respond to member and customer inquiries across email (info@), WhatsApp, and voicemail
  • Run weekly audits to ensure reservations/registrations align with policy
Staff Leadership & Development
  • Hire, train, and manage all club staff (Leads, Associates, and coordination with coaches)
  • Conduct interviews for new hires
  • Administer staff quizzes/training to assess role knowledge and ability
  • Maintain a 90%+ average daily checklist completion rate across the team
  • Hold regular meetings with lead staff on policy changes, compliance, and rollouts
  • Review shift feedback, order data, and volume to determine staffing needs
  • Submit tips and timesheet review every payroll period
  • Manage performance, up to and including termination when warranted
Programming & Operations
  • Develop operational documentation and procedures for new initiatives
  • Work with Kitchen and Club leads to determine feasibility of new initiatives
  • Be on‑site for the implementation of new projects and programs
  • Create and edit club programming on CourtReserve; update settings to align with policy
  • Ensure proper staffing and communication of requirements for daily operations
Private Events
  • Own the private events pipeline from inquiry through execution
  • Send invoicing for private events
  • Create day‑of timelines for on‑site staff
  • Ensure proper staffing and communication of event requirements
  • Collect event tips and include in payroll
Marketing & Communications
  • Send the bi‑weekly newsletter
  • Perform website (Elementor) updates
  • Develop and display TV graphics for private events, specials, and promotions
  • Partner with the Events & Marketing Coordinator on local outreach and campaigns
Facility & Compliance
  • Maintain club cleanliness, safety, and compliance standards
  • Report and coordinate resolution of facility issues with vendors
  • Conduct regular operational walkthroughs/audits
Qualifications
  • 3+ years managing a club, gym, restaurant, or hospitality operation with P&L accountability — this is the core requirement
  • Strong financial acumen; comfortable owning a budget and reading financial reports
  • Proven experience hiring, training, and managing a team
  • Highly organized, proactive, and comfortable wearing many hats in a small business environment
  • Pickleball or racquet sports experience is not required, but is a strong plus
  • Based in or near Oakland, CA — this is a full‑time, on‑site role
Compensation

$70,000–$80,000 base, plus a performance bonus tied to operational targets.
