Job Description

JOB TITLE: Pickelball/General Gym Instructor-

LOCATION/DEPT: Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center

REPORTS TO (TITLE): Sports and Athletic Manager

PAY GRADE: 202

PAY RANGE: $17.00- $20.40

DEPARTMENT MISSION

The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center of Chicago exists to express the mission and ministry of the Salvation Army through a safe, enriching and sacred environment where all individuals have access to opportunities to reach their physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential. The Vision of the Chicago Kroc Center is to impact individuals, families and seniors of the Southside while building community, promoting excellence, motivating wellness, teaching character, and encouraging faith.

OUTCOMES

Under the direction of the respective Sports and Athletic Manager, Pickelball/General Gym Instructor will give instruction to students of all ages and ability levels in subject areas related to Athletic Recreation, Education. These individuals will design instructional programs, prepare lesson plans and instructional materials, present subject matter demonstrating proper techniques, and help the athletic recreational programs through organizing and supervising leagues and non-league activities in the gymnasium.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide instruction in assigned subject/area specifically pickleball.
    1. Assist in scheduling and coordinating pickleball leagues for the athletic programs.
    2. Strong understanding of pickleball rules, strategies, and techniques. Be able to teach beginners through advanced learners.
    3. Critique and give feedback to participants regarding their work and performance level.
    4. Provide assistance as needed:
      1. Information for flyers/newsletters of upcoming leagues and programs.
      2. Officials needed and league dates and times for programs.
      3. Meetings at the beginning of each league to discuss roles, league fees, awards and other related information.
    5. Establish a working relationship with volunteers and incorporate them into the program activities.
    6. Maintain guidelines related to the gymnasium and athletic field with regard to the use of food and beverages in assigned areas.
    7. Ensure that any changes or modifications are communicated to all participants in an efficient manner.
    8. Develop and instruct fun, energetic and highly motivational classes for all skill levels.
    9. Assist in developing cooperative ventures that engage other community groups in the development of programs as it relates to specifically to the gymnasium and athletic field of the RJKCCC.
    10. Ensure that all equipment assigned to the gymnasium and outdoor fields/courts is maintained and inventoried.
    11. Handle disputes with participants, coaches, and parents in a professional manner.
    12. Report on time and prepared to teach assigned class.
    13. Carry out program evaluations as directed.
    14. Sets up equipment and distributes supplies and equipment.
  2. Maintain a safe learning environment.
    1. Implement safely measures for group exercises classes to insure the health and safety of group exercise participants.
    2. Report all harmful problems with facilities to the proper supervisor.
    3. Adhere to all Safe from Harm Policies and Procedures as established by The Salvation Army.
    4. Generate legible and accurate accident and incident reports as required and immediately rectify or notify appropriate personnel of all accidents or potentially unsafe conditions.
  3. Communication
    1. Ensure customer service standards are met, improved upon issues that arise with direct follow-up with unsatisfied members and/or guests.
    2. Good interpersonal skills for building positive relationships with participants while creating a supportive learning environment.
    3. Attend all staff meetings.
  4. Maintain the Code of Ethics Policy which has been established for the Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center.
  5. Recognize the spiritual need of individuals which may require referral to the pastoral team.
  6. Perform other assignments/duties as directed.

RELATIONSHIPS

This individual interacts with a wide range of contacts both within and outside the Salvation Army. In these contacts they act as a representative of the Army and its mission.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Under general supervision of the Sports and Athletic Manager with some freedom to plan, schedule and carry out responsibilities within established policies and guidelines.

PERFORMANCE MEASURMENTS

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved as well as how effectively the mission and objectives of The RJKCCC are met.

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE

  • First Aid, CPR and AED required within 30 days of hire.
  • Safe From Harm certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • 2 years of college in a related field and/or equivalent experience teaching and coaching recreational activities
  • 2 years or more experience working with children and adults.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Current credentials and/or certificates in pickleball instructor preferred.
  • Experience with a computer-based work environment.

COMPENTENCIES:

  • Extensive knowledge of the area being taught.
  • An understanding of child development and building assets in youth, if applicable.
  • An understanding of adult teaching and learning, if applicable.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and leadership skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently as a self-starter and use initiative.
  • An attentive to and work appropriately with culturally and socio-economically diverse client population.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.
  • An ability to work with confidential material.
  • Successfully complete Safe From Harm training as established by The Salvation Army
  • Willing to promote the mission of The Salvation Army

POSITION LIMITATIONS

This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.

This individual will keep the Sports and Athletic Manager informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.

This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is required to do moderate physical work and must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds. In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use equipment used in sports activities. The work environment for this position includes a community center environment with a medium to high noise level.
