What Does a Picker/Packer Do?

Picker packers find and collect merchandise in a warehouse and prepare the items for shipment to customers. As a picker packer, you use a computer or scanner to check inventory and locate items. You load items onto dollies or conveyer belts to move them throughout the distribution center, and then you assemble packages for shipping. The qualifications for picker packer jobs are physical strength and stamina, a strong work ethic, and excellent teamwork skills. With experience, you can move into team leader roles with more responsibilities.

What are some common challenges Picker Packers face and how can they be managed effectively?

Picker Packers often work in fast-paced warehouse environments where meeting productivity targets and maintaining accuracy are key challenges. The repetitive nature of the job and the physical demands, such as standing for long periods and lifting items, can also be taxing. To manage these challenges, it's important to use proper lifting techniques, take scheduled breaks, and stay organized. Many warehouses provide training and ergonomic equipment to help team members work efficiently and safely. Building good communication with supervisors and co-workers can also help address issues quickly and maintain a positive workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Picker Packer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Picker Packer, you need strong attention to detail, basic literacy and numeracy, and physical stamina, often with a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), handheld barcode scanners, and inventory software is typically required. Reliability, teamwork, and time management are crucial soft skills for excelling in this fast-paced environment. These abilities ensure accurate order fulfillment, operational efficiency, and workplace safety.

Both roles are essential in logistics and retail sectors, making them common comparison points for job seekers.

What do you do as a picker packer?

A picker packer is responsible for selecting items from inventory based on customer orders, packing them securely, and preparing shipments for delivery. The role often involves using handheld scanners, working in a warehouse environment, and following safety procedures. Attention to detail and efficiency are important skills for this job.

How much do picker packers get paid?

Picker packers typically earn between $12 and $17 per hour, depending on experience, location, and the employer. Some positions may offer overtime pay or bonuses, especially during peak seasons or in warehouse environments that require physical stamina and attention to detail.

What jobs pay 4000 a week without a degree?

Picker packer roles typically do not pay $4,000 a week; however, high-paying warehouse or logistics management positions may reach that level with experience and overtime. Some specialized roles in logistics, supply chain management, or skilled trades can also offer such earnings without a degree, often requiring relevant skills, certifications, or extensive experience. These jobs usually involve physical work, operational skills, or supervisory responsibilities.

What are Picker Packers?

Picker Packers are warehouse workers responsible for selecting (picking) items from inventory and preparing (packing) them for shipment. They ensure that orders are accurately fulfilled and packaged securely to prevent damage during transit. Picker Packers may also assist with inventory management, labeling, and maintaining a clean work environment. This role is essential in ensuring efficient order processing and customer satisfaction in distribution centers and warehouses.

    • Assist with fleet and equipment readiness — trailers, forklifts, tools, and vehicles.
    • Support consignment intake, quality control, and equipment inspection processes.
  • Safety & Compliance
    • Enforce OSHA and company safety standards.
    • Conduct routine inspections of warehouse equipment and storage areas.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years in warehouse, logistics, or operations management (marine or construction industry a plus).
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Experience with inventory systems or software (CRM experience is beneficial).
  • Forklift certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to lift/move heavy equipment and work in fast-paced, seasonal environments.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and seasonal performance bonuses
  • Opportunity to grow with a rapidly expanding marine services company
  • Supportive, team-focused work culture
  • Seasonal schedule flexibility (off-peak winter planning/maintenance)

Ideal Candidate Traits

  • Proactive problem-solver
  • Detail-oriented and process-driven
  • Strong communicator
  • Enjoys working with hands-on equipment and logistics
