Job description

Position Summary
The Meat Clerk is responsible for providing excellent customer service while supporting the day-to-day operations of the Meat Department. Responsibilities include stocking, weighing, wrapping, pricing, displaying, and merchandising meat, poultry, seafood, and related products. The Meat Clerk maintains department cleanliness, food safety standards, and product quality while working in accordance with company policies, food safety regulations, and the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide exceptional customer service and respond to customer inquiries and requests.
  • Weigh, wrap, label, and price meat, poultry, seafood, and related products.
  • Stock and replenish service cases, display cases, coolers, and sales floors.
  • Rotate products to ensure freshness and quality.
  • Maintain attractive, organized, and fully stocked displays.
  • Assist customers with product selection and special requests.
  • Perform basic cutting of steaks or roasts from pre-processed products consistent with training and job classification.
  • Operate approved department equipment, including scales, wrapping equipment, slicers, grinders, and cube steak machines as assigned.
  • Receive, unpack, organize, and stock product deliveries.
  • Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of work areas, equipment, counters, cases, coolers, and preparation areas.
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, health, and workplace safety requirements.
  • Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain compliance with company policies, applicable laws, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Perform other related duties within the scope of the Meat Clerk classification.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous grocery, food service, meat department, or customer service experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to safely operate department equipment after training.
  • Ability to accurately follow instructions, safety procedures, and food handling standards.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, reach, twist, push, pull, and kneel throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated coolers and freezer environments.
  • Ability to safely use knives and department equipment following training.
Work Environment: Retail grocery store environment.
  • Frequent exposure to refrigerated and freezer temperatures.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals and sanitation products.
  • Weekend, holiday, and evening availability may be required based on business needs and scheduling provisions under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Compensation and Benefits
Wages, scheduling, overtime, benefits, seniority rights, bidding opportunities, grievance procedures, and other terms and conditions of employment are governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Piazza's Fine Foods and UFCW Local 5.
