Job description

Job Title: Principal Investigator (PI)

Job Description

This Principal Investigator (PI) opportunity allows practicing physicians to integrate clinical research into their existing medical practice through a partnership model rather than a traditional full-time or salaried role. The PI will conduct and oversee clinical trials within their own practice setting while leveraging centralized regulatory, operational, and infrastructure support. This role offers a way to expand patient care options, contribute to medical advancement, and generate additional revenue through research participation without incurring upfront costs.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and oversee clinical trials within an existing medical practice, ensuring high standards of clinical care and data integrity.
  • Collaborate closely with centralized regulatory and operational teams to initiate, manage, and complete clinical studies efficiently.
  • Ensure strict compliance with study protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and applicable regulatory requirements throughout the trial lifecycle.
  • Engage and educate established patient populations to promote appropriate trial participation and retention.
  • Integrate research activities into routine clinical workflows while maintaining quality of care and patient safety.
  • Provide medical leadership and oversight to the research team, including sub‑investigators such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, or additional physicians when available.
  • Review and interpret clinical data related to study subjects and communicate findings as required by study sponsors and regulatory bodies.
  • Participate in study start-up activities, including site qualification, feasibility assessments, and protocol review as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) with an active medical practice.
  • Board certification in a relevant medical specialty.
  • Established patient population within the existing practice (required).
  • Strong interest in participating in clinical research and integrating trials into routine clinical care.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with study protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Capability to engage and communicate effectively with patients about clinical trial participation.
  • Willingness to collaborate with centralized regulatory and operational teams.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of clinical quality, ethics, and patient safety in a research setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience or clinical focus in central nervous system (CNS) disorders, cardiometabolic conditions, or dermatology.
  • Prior clinical research experience, such as serving as a sub‑investigator or primary investigator (preferred but not required).
  • Access to sub‑investigators, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, or additional physicians within the practice.
  • Familiarity with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles and clinical trial operations.
  • Strong organizational skills to integrate research activities into existing practice workflows.
  • Interest in expanding practice services and contributing to medical innovation through clinical trials.

Work Environment

The Principal Investigator conducts clinical research within their own active medical practice, embedding trial activities into the existing clinical environment. The practice benefits from externally provided equipment, regulatory support, operational resources, and study infrastructure, allowing research to be integrated without upfront costs. The PI collaborates with centralized teams that handle regulatory and operational functions, creating a structured and supported research setting. Clinical trials are conducted during the practice’s normal operating hours, aligning with existing patient schedules and workflows. The environment is professional and patient-centered, focused on delivering high-quality clinical care while generating robust research data and offering patients access to clinical trial opportunities.
