What is a physical therapist tech?

Physical Therapist Techs, also known as physical therapy aides or assistants, are healthcare workers who support physical therapists in delivering care to patients. They help set up equipment, assist patients during exercises, maintain treatment areas, and perform various administrative tasks. While they do not provide direct physical therapy treatments or create care plans, their support is essential in ensuring efficient and effective therapy sessions. Physical Therapist Techs often work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation centers, and other healthcare settings.

What does a physical therapist tech do?

Physical Therapist Techs typically assist physical therapists by preparing treatment areas, helping patients with exercises, and maintaining equipment. They may also transport patients, document session details, and provide encouragement during rehabilitation activities. By handling these supportive tasks, Physical Therapist Techs allow licensed therapists to focus on developing and adjusting treatment plans, making the tech role essential for smooth clinic operations and excellent patient care.

What skills and qualifications does a physical therapist tech need?

To thrive as a Physical Therapist Tech, you need a foundational knowledge of anatomy, exercise techniques, and patient care, typically acquired through a high school diploma or associate degree and on-the-job training. Familiarity with rehabilitation equipment, exercise software, and patient documentation systems is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to motivate patients help you excel in supporting both therapists and clients. These skills ensure effective therapy sessions, patient safety, and smooth clinic operations.
