What is a Photomask job?

A Photomask job involves designing, inspecting, and fabricating high-precision masks used in semiconductor manufacturing. These masks are templates that guide the patterning of microcircuits onto silicon wafers. Professionals in this field work with advanced lithography tools, cleanroom environments, and computer-aided design (CAD) software to ensure accuracy. Their role is critical for producing integrated circuits with ever-smaller geometries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Photomask position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Photomask role, you should have a strong background in semiconductor manufacturing processes, photolithography, and precision measurement, often supported by a degree in engineering, materials science, or a related field. Familiarity with advanced fabrication tools, CAD software, cleanroom protocols, and sometimes industry certifications in microfabrication are typical requirements. Attention to detail, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities help differentiate top performers in this field. These skills ensure the precise production of photomasks, which are critical to maintaining high standards and yield in semiconductor device manufacturing.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of someone working in a Photomask role?

A typical day for a Photomask professional involves designing, inspecting, and fabricating photomasks used in semiconductor manufacturing, as well as ensuring quality control through rigorous testing and measurement. You may collaborate closely with process engineers, lithography teams, and R&D engineers to resolve technical issues and optimize patterns for production. Regular responsibilities often include maintaining documentation, operating precision equipment in cleanroom conditions, and troubleshooting defects. The role is highly collaborative and requires constant attention to detail to support ongoing advances in chip technology.

Job description

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all.
Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.
We are part of Micron's Technology and Products Group (TPG), where advanced memory technologies move from concept to reality. Our Tapeout Operations team sits at the center of that journey, partnering across design, process, and manufacturing to deliver reticles that enable next-generation products. We thrive on precision, collaboration, and adapting quickly without sacrificing quality.
As a Reticle (Photomask) Project Coordinator, you play a meaningful role in turning design intent into manufacturable reality. You will lead reticle projects end to end, coordinating across global partners to ensure accurate, on-time delivery. This is a hands-on, highly visible role that blends semiconductor fundamentals with strong project leadership and problem solving.
Responsibilities:
  • Own reticle projects from design definition through mask delivery
  • Develop and implement project plans that ensure quality, schedule, and risk alignment
  • Define, document, and manage reticle and layout change requirements
  • Drive issue resolution through structured problem solving and multi-functional engagement
  • Improve tapeout efficiency, cycle time, and quality through process and documentation improvements

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related science field
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience managing reticle or photomask projects
  • Solid understanding of semiconductor manufacturing with exposure to photolithography
  • Experience operating in an HVM environment with strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Clear, concise communication skills in English with the ability to lead complex discussions

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Engineering or a related technical field
  • Understanding of OPC and reticle manufacturing flows
  • Experience with layout viewers such as K2View and DF2 databases
  • Data analysis experience using tools such as Tableau or JMP
  • Demonstrated use of structured problem-solving methods such as 5 Whys or G8D
