How much do photolithography engineer jobs pay per year?
What does a Photolithography Engineer do?
A Photolithography Engineer is responsible for developing and optimizing photolithography processes used in semiconductor manufacturing. They work with photomasks, resists, and advanced lithography equipment to define circuit patterns on silicon wafers. Their role includes troubleshooting process issues, improving resolution and yield, and collaborating with process integration and equipment teams to enhance production efficiency.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Photolithography Engineer position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Photolithography Engineer, you need a strong background in semiconductor device physics, process engineering, and photolithographic techniques, typically underpinned by a degree in electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as stepper/scanner systems (e.g., ASML), cleanroom protocols, and process control software is essential, and industry certifications can be advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this position. These capabilities are vital to maintaining high-yield, defect-free production in the fast-paced, precision-driven semiconductor manufacturing environment.
What does a typical day look like for a Photolithography Engineer in a semiconductor fabrication facility?
A typical day for a Photolithography Engineer involves monitoring and optimizing photolithography processes, troubleshooting equipment or process deviations, and collaborating closely with process integration, equipment maintenance, and quality assurance teams. You'll spend time both in cleanroom environments operating and maintaining lithography equipment, as well as in office settings analyzing data to improve process yields. Participation in cross-functional meetings to discuss production metrics, new technology introductions, or problem-solving is common. The role balances hands-on technical work with analytical responsibilities and provides opportunities to contribute to continuous improvement projects.

Job description
Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.
As a Sr. Engineer in photo process development, you will be a part of ground-breaking Sophisticated DRAM research & development photolithography team. The position promises ample opportunities for innovation, collaboration and testing a new dimension with next generation DRAM. You will work directly with process integration and other process areas such as Wet etch, CVD, Diffusion, Metals, Dry Etch & CMP. You will work on innovative and outstanding lithography scanners & own the process roadmap to meet program and yield goals.
In this role, your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Lead a particular module within next generation storage device. Develop new, manufacturing friendly photolithography processes that enable the physical and electrical architecture with lithography technology, including 365, 248, and 193 immersion lithography. Engage with equipment/material vendors on new solutions to overcome process challenges.
- Innovate new design, layout, and photolithography techniques to open a solution space for building future generations of memory devices. Review all types of literature to identify potential intellectual properties (IP) opportunities and file disclosures.
- Use data analysis, and/or machine learning to identify root cause by correlating device failure with process conditions. Data may include critical dimension, registration, cross section, etc.
- Document and communicate plans, status, and results of projects in written reports and presentations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5+ years of Photolithography experience!
- Strong skills for research and development, and ability to build manufacturing-friendly technologies.
- Understanding optics to include the principles and application of immersion lithography, polarized illumination, and low k1 imaging.
- Experience with chemical process specific to lithography, including materials for 365, 248, and 193nm lithography.
- Understanding of material properties and characterization techniques of lithography.
- Ability to work well with others in a highly collaborative environment, as well as independently with strong sense of ownership.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Strong communication skills (written, verbal and presentation).
- Required Education: PhD and 3 years of relevant industry experience, OR a Master's degree and 5 years of relevant industry experience OR a Bachelor's Degree and 7+ years of relevant industry experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Data science and programming experience/coursework are strongly preferred.
- Coursework or experience in photolithography and semiconductor manufacturing preferred.
- Experience with photolithography simulation software is a plus.
