Job description

Position Summary
The Mental Wellness Counselor at Pfeiffer University plays a vital role in advancing the University's mission to educate students for lives of purpose, service, and leadership. As part of a student-focused community, this position provides compassionate, ethical, and developmentally appropriate mental health services that support the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth of students.
The Staff Counselor contributes to a campus culture of care by promoting well-being, fostering resilience, and supporting students as they navigate personal challenges within a close-knit, values-driven environment.
Responsibilities:
A. Clinical Counseling & Holistic Student Care
โ€ข Provide short-term individual and group counseling to students, addressing concerns such as anxiety, depression, identity development, academic stress, and life transitions.
โ€ข Conduct intake assessments and develop treatment plans that reflect a holistic understanding of student well-being.
โ€ข Support students in integrating personal, academic, and (when appropriate) spiritual dimensions of their growth.
โ€ข Maintain timely and confidential clinical documentation in accordance with professional and legal standards.
B. Crisis Response & Student Well-Being
โ€ข Provide crisis assessment and intervention for students experiencing acute distress.
โ€ข Collaborate with campus partners (e.g., Residence Life, Campus Police, Student Development) to ensure coordinated and compassionate responses.
โ€ข Participate in an on-call or after-hours support rotation, as needed in a residential campus environment.
C. Outreach, Prevention & Campus Engagement
โ€ข Design and facilitate outreach programs that promote mental health awareness, resilience, and healthy living.
โ€ข Partner with Residence Life, Athletics, Campus Ministry, and student organizations to extend counseling services across campus.
โ€ข Contribute to a campus culture that encourages care for self and others, reduces stigma, and reflects Pfeiffer's commitment to community and belonging.
D. Consultation & Collaboration
โ€ข Serve as a resource to faculty, staff, and administrators in supporting students of concern.
โ€ข Participate in multidisciplinary teams focused on student success, retention, and well-being.
โ€ข Engage actively in the life of the University, contributing to its mission-centered and relational campus environment.
E. Ethical Practice & Professional Growth
โ€ข Adhere to ethical standards of the counseling profession and all applicable laws and regulations.
โ€ข Maintain appropriate licensure and engage in ongoing professional development.
โ€ข Support continuous improvement efforts within Counseling Services.

Required Qualifications:
โ€ข Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
โ€ข Current licensure or license-eligibility in North Carolina (e.g., LCMHC, LCSW, or equivalent).
โ€ข Demonstrated experience providing counseling to college-aged or emerging adult populations.
โ€ข Strong interpersonal, clinical, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
โ€ข Full licensure in North Carolina (LCMHC, LCSW).
โ€ข Prior experience in a college or university counseling center.
โ€ข Experience with crisis intervention, risk assessment, and brief therapy models.
โ€ข Comfort working within a faith-informed, values-based institutional context.
