The main difference between a Personal Training Manager and a Personal Trainer lies in their roles. The manager oversees staff and operations, while the trainer focuses on working directly with clients. Both roles require similar certifications, but their responsibilities and work environments differ significantly.

What does a personal training manager do?

A Personal Training Manager oversees the personal training department within a gym or fitness center. Their main responsibilities include hiring and supervising personal trainers, developing training programs, ensuring client satisfaction, and meeting business targets such as sales and client retention. They also handle administrative tasks, provide ongoing education and support for trainers, and often interact with clients to maintain high service standards. Ultimately, they ensure both trainers and clients have a positive and productive experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a personal training manager?

To thrive as a Personal Training Manager, you need a strong background in exercise science, fitness training, and team leadership, often supported by a relevant degree and personal trainer certification. Familiarity with gym management software, fitness assessment tools, and scheduling systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, motivational, and organizational skills help you inspire trainers and clients while managing daily operations. These abilities ensure effective team performance, client satisfaction, and the achievement of business goals in a competitive fitness environment.

How does a personal training manager balance administrative duties with hands-on coaching responsibilities?

Personal Training Managers often split their time between overseeing the gym’s personal training operations—such as scheduling, staff development, and client management—and actively working with clients or mentoring trainers on the floor. This balance can vary depending on the size of the facility, but strong organizational skills and effective delegation are key. Managers are expected to lead by example, maintain high standards for client service, and ensure trainers are meeting their goals, which means blending administrative oversight with a visible, supportive presence in the training area.

Job description

At VASA Fitness, we're more than a gym--we're a community built on unity, passion, love, integrity, fun, and trust. We create UPLIFTing experiences for everyone through inclusive, accessible, and on-trend fitness. VASA is a place where lives are changed through authentic connections, growth, and support--for both members and team members.
We are opening a brand-new club-and we're building the team now. Training begins in October! This is a unique opportunity to train together, grow together, and help shape the culture from day one.
You'll travel to another market for training at an established club-learning the role, building connections, and bringing that experience back to launch your new location.
HOW YOU WILL CHANGE LIVES
Within our clubs, you'll find VASA's in-house boutique STUDIO experience -- premium small-group spaces offering high-intensity interval training, infrared yoga, and strength training. These spaces deliver results-driven workouts led by expert coaches who motivate, connect, and inspire. The STUDIO Team Lead (STL) is the coach behind the coaches.
This role is a platform for personal and professional growth, where you can ensure members and guests receive an exceptional experience through classes that motivate, UPLIFT, and create community. You'll lead by example, developing and mentoring your team of STUDIO Coaches, ensuring their sessions are safe, effective, and always aligned with VASA's standards. From scheduling and staffing to analyzing participation trends, you'll balance business goals with an unwavering commitment to member experience. Your leadership will help create an environment where every member feels supported, every coach feels valued, and every visit feels like progress.
WHO CAN THRIVE IN THIS ROLE
You don't need prior STUDIO or boutique leadership experience to succeed here--just the right certification and a drive to lead others. If you've led teams in retail, restaurants, hospitality, sales, or other fast-paced environments, your leadership experience translates. We'll train and support you in building a strong coaching team while you bring the energy, organization, and motivation that fuels our STUDIO community.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?
When you join VASA, you'll find more than a job--you'll find a place to belong. Our leaders believe in our mission, have high standards, and give energy to others every day.
  • Wellness is a priority! All employees receive two complimentary gym memberships--one for you and one to share--plus discounted personal training sessions.
  • All employees are eligible to participate in 401(k) options, and the Employee Assistance Program -- FREE therapy, financial advising, legal advice, and more.
  • 30+ hours/week employees: Paid Time Off (hourly), Health, Dental, Vision Benefits and Paid Parental Leave.
  • 40 hours/week employees: Flexible Vacation Plan (salary) & Paid Holidays.
  • COMPENSATION: Pay is $21.00 per hour + Bonus and Commission Opportunities! Class Rates paid at $35.00/hour.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • National Group Fitness Certification or NCCA-accredited Personal Training Certification required (both preferred).
  • Recently expired certifications? No problem--you'll have 90 days after hire to renew.
  • Yoga credential a plus.
  • Current CPR/AED certification required.
  • 3+ years of experience teaching group fitness, small group training, or boutique fitness classes (experience in specialty studios preferred).
  • Background in coaching, training, or leading teams in fitness or other industries.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • General knowledge of kinesiology, exercise science, and physical fitness.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and positive mindset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Passion for fitness, community, and helping people reach their goals.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE?
  • Recruiting, hiring, and developing a high-performing team of STUDIO Coaches who embody VASA's values.
  • Building class schedules that are on-trend, effective, and convenient for members.
  • Driving membership growth and retention by delivering consistent, results-oriented classes.
  • Meeting and exceeding monthly STUDIO sales and attendance goals.
  • Creating a community within STUDIO that's supportive, energetic, and welcoming to all fitness levels.
  • Maintaining clean, safe, and motivating environments that over-deliver on member value.
  • Coaching and developing your team through regular feedback, training, and recognition.

We are proud to be a Great Place to Work® certified company!
