What is a personal trainer intern?

Personal trainer interns are individuals who are gaining practical experience in the fitness industry under the supervision of certified personal trainers. They assist with workout sessions, learn how to create exercise programs, and observe client interactions to develop their skills. Interns may also help with administrative tasks, equipment setup, and maintaining gym cleanliness. This role is typically part of a pathway toward becoming a certified personal trainer.

What responsibilities does a personal trainer intern have?

As a Personal Trainer Intern, you'll typically support certified trainers by helping to set up equipment, demonstrate exercises, and observe training sessions. You may also assist with fitness assessments, track client progress, and maintain a clean, safe workout environment. While direct client interaction varies by facility, interns often get opportunities to shadow sessions, answer client questions, and eventually lead warm-ups or basic routines under supervision. This hands-on experience is crucial for developing coaching skills and building confidence in client engagement.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a personal trainer intern?

To thrive as a Personal Trainer Intern, you need foundational knowledge of exercise science, fitness assessment, and anatomy, often supported by coursework in kinesiology or a related degree. Familiarity with gym equipment, fitness tracking software, and pursuing certifications like NASM or ACE is highly beneficial. Excellent communication, motivation, and interpersonal skills help build client rapport and encourage positive behavioral changes. These skills and qualities are vital for creating effective, safe training programs and fostering client trust and results.

  • Connect with students through events, meals, and programs to foster their walk with Christ.

  • Plan, coordinate, and lead activities such as weekly social events, summer trips, and a summer mission trip.

  • Assist with administrative tasks and meet regularly with ministry directors for guidance and feedback.

Job description

Description

The summer internship lasts approximately 10 weeks from May 26 to August 9, with the expectation of a one week unpaid vacation taken with approval from the Director of Youth Ministry. Please note that, in addition to their individual focus of ministry, summer interns will be also be expected to engage with the youth ministry as well as the church body as a whole with events such as Vacation Bible School for children.
