What are Permissions Editors?

Permissions Editors are professionals responsible for managing and granting rights to use copyrighted materials, such as text, images, or multimedia, in publications or digital platforms. They review requests for content usage, negotiate licenses or permissions with rights holders, and ensure that all legal and contractual obligations are met. Their work helps organizations avoid copyright infringement and maintain compliance with intellectual property laws. Permissions Editors often work closely with authors, publishers, and legal teams to facilitate the legal use of third-party content.

What are some common challenges faced by Permissions Editors when securing rights for content use?

Permissions Editors often encounter challenges such as negotiating with multiple rights holders, navigating complex copyright laws, and dealing with tight publication deadlines. They must carefully review contracts and permissions to ensure all necessary rights are secured, which can involve extensive communication and follow-up. Additionally, Permissions Editors need to stay updated on evolving legal standards and best practices to avoid infringement issues and support their organization's publishing goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Permissions Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Permissions Editor, you need a solid understanding of copyright law, attention to detail, and strong research skills, usually supported by a degree in publishing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with rights management databases, contract management systems, and digital asset tracking tools is typically required. Excellent negotiation, organization, and communication skills help you efficiently secure content rights and liaise with external parties. These abilities are crucial for ensuring legal compliance, minimizing risk, and supporting the publication process efficiently.

Job description

Associate Editor - News

Hyperallergic is a leading online voice publishing contemporary perspectives on art, culture, and more. Founded in 2009 as a forum for playful, serious, and radical perspectives on art in society, Hyperallergic combines art world news coverage with insightful commentary to reach an influential audience of over one million readers a month.

Hyperallergic is seeking an Associate Editor to join our team in Brooklyn. The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of newsroom experience and a track record of producing impactful stories on the visual culture beat.ย

As Associate Editor, you will be responsible for both editing and writing daily news, from breaking coverage to explainers tied to current events.ย

We're looking for a journalist with well-developed sources in the art world and a deep understanding of the industry. Knowledge of visual artists, museums and institutions, the art market, online culture, and the intersections between art and politics is required.ย

The candidate should be a quick and flexible thinker who is comfortable shifting gears at a moment's notice to respond to a fast-moving news cycle, producing 3-5 articles a day through a combination of editing and writing. A typical week involves a mix of strategizing daily coverage, assigning and editing filed stories, and writing news reports as needed.

You'll also be expected to bring ideas to the table, actively look for stories, and help cultivate Hyperallergic's growing roster of sources and writers.

We would prefer to hire an enthusiastic Hyperallergic reader who is already familiar with our News desk. Our newsroom covers everything from activism, protest art, labor movements, and museum controversies to art fairs, auctions, memes, and archaeological discoveries, just to name a few topics. We are looking for an editor who's just as excited about and comfortable toggling between these areas of coverage.

The Associate Editor will manage a team of staff writers and freelancers under the supervision of the Senior Editor and Editor-in-Chief.ย

This is a full-time position with benefits. Editors are required to work from our office in Brooklyn four days a week, with the option to work remotely on Fridays.

Responsibilities

  • Strategizing the day's coverage in collaboration with the Senior Editor and Editor-in-Chief
  • Commissioning and editing daily news stories, including breaking news, original reporting, explainers, and more, to produce up to 3-5 stories/day
  • In collaboration with the Senior Editor, helping manage a team of in-house staff reporters and freelance contributors
  • Writing daily news and other pieces as needed
  • Edit article drafts with an eye for grammar, syntax, word choice, spelling, and punctuation as well as structure and flow
  • Fact-check pieces and flag factual errors
  • Find appropriate images for each article and secure image rights/permissions
  • Stay on top of important developments in the arts and culture sector and help develop story ideas
  • Work with writers to select images for each article.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of newsroom experience as an editor or reporter
  • A network in the visual art world and the ability to cultivate new sources by responding to tips and attending events on behalf of Hyperallergicย
  • An insatiable curiosity for the dynamics of the visual art world and its intersections with global and national politics, social justice movements, and power dynamics
  • Experience with or an interest in other forms of media, such as video and audio, is a plus.
  • Ability to work well on a team, complete tasks under tight deadlines, problem-solve, and communicate effectively with writers on difficult topics

Benefits

  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k with 3.5% match)
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Commuter Benefits
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick, & Public Holidays)

Salary range: $70,000-$80,000/year (Depending on experience)
