Purpose:

Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps Mission

Our vision is to lead our Nations back to ecological and cultural well-being by engaging underrepresented Indigenous youth and young adults in conservation service programs that reconnect participants to the land, their cultural heritage, and their traditions. We work to remove barriers to participation, education, and employment by partnering with local community organizations, agencies, and institutes of higher learning to create paid service and career training opportunities, personal and professional development, and pathways to postsecondary education and employment.

*Ancestral Lands serves local tribal communities in the regions we operate. National Park Service Mission:

The National Park Service (NPS) preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The NPS cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.

ALCC in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) is seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Apprenticeship Program (TTAP). Members will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation's historic resources. This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

Every year, the Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) places aspiring preservationists at national parks across the country to preserve cultural resources and crucial infrastructure. TTAP participants have:

  • repaired historic window sashes,
  • removed old mortar and pointed walls,
  • stabilized historic barn foundations,
  • waxed and treated bronze monuments,
  • restored historic viewsheds, and more!

The program is committed to providing all aspiring preservationists-especially those interested in the traditional trades-with an unique opportunity to work on important real-world projects while building professional experience and a life-long connection to America's national parks. This also allows experienced NPS preservation professionals the opportunity to pass on the craft skills, ensuring national park histories continue to inspire and educate the next generation.

An Ancestral Sonoran Desert People's farming community and "Great House" are preserved at Casa Grande Ruins. Whether a gathering place for people or simply a waypoint marker in an extensive system of canals and trading partners, the structures are a large part of the story of this site. Explore the history and stories of an extended network of communities and irrigation canals.

Description of Duties:

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Preparing mortar & plaster mixtures
  • Removal of historic stabilization layers
  • Filling voids in the puddled adobe architecture caused by erosion & pest species
  • Drain repair and contouring to improve drainage
  • Room backfill to protect subsurface deposits
  • Site documentation
  • Removal and replacing of stucco layers
  • Replacing deteriorated adobe wall surfaces
  • Removal and replacement of stucco layers
  • Resetting loose cap and mid-wall masonry
  • Weeding and removal of invasive plants to maintain landscape
  • Maintaining the watering and sprinkling system
  • Maintaining garden beds

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age and up to the age of 30
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • This position requires moderate to heavy physical effort, including lifting or handling of objects over 50 lbs. using proper techniques
  • Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces, and/or be able to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to work up to 10-hour days outdoors.
  • Ability to hike rough, uneven terrain
  • Willingness to learn and work as part of a team
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Positive Attitude
  • Driver's License with a minimum 3 years of a clean driving record

Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve 10/26/2026 to 04/30/2027, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
  • Member will receive orientation to Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps and Conservation Legacy
  • Member will receive training to ensure proper preservation techniques, site tours, plant identification, interpretation of the park, maintaining safety protocols in the field, and working in historic sites and engaging the public.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
