The Senior Controls Engineer serves as the technical lead and subject matter expert for Building Management Systems (BMS), Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), and related controls infrastructure supporting CyrusOne's global data center portfolio. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining controls engineering standards, design criteria, controls architectures, and technical requirements while ensuring controls solutions are reliably integrated into data center design, construction, commissioning, and operations. The Senior Controls Engineer partners closely with Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, Operations, IT, Security, external consultants, and customers to deliver scalable, standardized, and operationally effective controls solutions that support business and customer requirements.

Responsibilities

Controls Engineering & Design

  • Serve as the engineering lead and subject matter expert for BMS, EPMS, and related controls systems supporting mission-critical facilities.
  • Develop, review, and maintain controls design criteria, engineering standards, sequences of operation, controls narratives, points lists, and related engineering documentation.
  • Support development of controls architecture and ensure designs align with operational, customer, and Engineering requirements.
  • Review drawings, specifications, calculations, and consultant deliverables for technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Identify controls-related scope gaps, design risks, and integration challenges during the design process and develop appropriate solutions.

Requirements Development & Customer Support

  • Translate customer requirements, operational requirements, and technical standards into clear engineering design criteria and controls requirements.
  • Support customer design reviews and participate in technical discussions with hyperscale, enterprise, and colocation customers.
  • Coordinate closely with design consultants and Engineers of Record to ensure customer requirements are incorporated into project deliverables.
  • Support development of standardized controls requirements and design approaches across CyrusOne's global data center portfolio.

Project Support & Delivery

  • Participate in projects from pre-construction planning through commissioning and turnover.
  • Collaborate with Construction, Commissioning, Operations, Security, and IT teams to ensure controls-related requirements are understood and effectively executed.
  • Support construction-phase technical reviews, issue resolution, design clarifications, and field questions related to controls systems.
  • Participate in startup, commissioning, integrated systems testing, and validation activities to verify conformance with design intent.
  • Remain engaged throughout project execution to ensure controls systems are delivered in accordance with approved engineering requirements and customer commitments.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary engineering interface for controls-related discussions between Engineering, Construction, Operations, IT, Security, and customer stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering disciplines to integrate controls requirements into overall facility design.
  • Provide technical guidance and recommendations on controls technologies, design standards, and industry best practices.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts aimed at improving reliability, consistency, scalability, and standardization of controls solutions across the portfolio.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in controls engineering, mission-critical facilities, data center design, industrial infrastructure, or similar complex engineering environments.
  • Experience designing, specifying, commissioning, or supporting Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS).
  • Strong understanding of controls architecture, communication protocols, instrumentation, metering, and control system hardware.
  • Experience developing and reviewing engineering drawings, specifications, controls narratives, sequences of operation, and technical design packages.
  • Experience working with engineering consultants, design partners, contractors, and cross-functional project teams.
  • Strong technical communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with customers and executive stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting hyperscale, cloud, colocation, or other mission-critical facilities.
  • Experience with facility modernization, expansion, or capacity enhancement projects.
  • Experience developing engineering standards, design guidelines, and technical specifications.
  • Familiarity with Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, or similar engineering and design tools.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure preferred.
