Job Summary
The Senior Microsoft 365 Engineer is responsible for engineering, administering, and supporting a secure, scalable, and reliable Microsoft 365 environment in a hybrid enterprise setting. This role designs, configures, and supports core Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive while ensuring alignment with business needs, security standards, compliance requirements, and operational best practices. This position is responsible for Microsoft 365 platform configuration, automation using PowerShell and Microsoft Graph, service health monitoring, security and compliance administration, and complex problem resolution. The role serves as the highest level of escalation for Microsoft 365 issues and partners closely with Infrastructure, Security, IAM, Networking, and operational teams to support collaboration, messaging, productivity, risk management, continuous improvement, and reliable service delivery across the organization.
Responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Own and engineer Microsoft 365 tenant services across Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
2. Design secure, scalable Microsoft 365 architecture aligned to business and technical needs.
3. Create and maintain mail flow, transport rules, and messaging security configurations.
4. Define and enforce governance for Teams, SharePoint sites, and OneDrive sharing.
5. Engineer and administer Microsoft Teams policies, configurations, and platform integrations in alignment with organizational standards and security requirements.
6. Lead migration of legacy file shares to SharePoint Online, ensuring adoption and governance.
7. Automate tenant operations using PowerShell and Microsoft Graph; reduce manual toil.
8. Serve as 4th level escalation for complex Microsoft 365 and messaging issues.
9. Maintain configuration baselines and standards; document changes and exceptions.
10. Align operations with ITIL processes for incident, problem, and change management.
11. Plan and execute changes through established governance and CAB processes.
12. Monitor service health, reliability, and capacity using Microsoft tools; respond to alerts.
13. Perform root cause analysis and drive permanent fixes for recurring issues.
14. Partner with IAM and Security teams on Conditional Access, MFA, and role design.
15. Track Microsoft 365 roadmap features; assess impact and plan releases.
16. Develop and maintain architecture diagrams, runbooks, SOPs, and knowledge articles.
17. Participate in emergency on call rotation and support major incident response.
18. Support license management and optimize platform usage and costs.
19. Contribute to SLA definition and meet operational and compliance commitments.
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education, preferably in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
Required Experience
Five (5) years of experience engineering and administering Microsoft 365
Preferred Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Microsoft certifications (e.g., Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert, SC-900, MS-900).
Preferred Educational Qualifications
An undergraduate or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in a related field.
Preferred Experience
Experience with Power Platform governance and automation; Teams Voice/Direct Routing exposure.
Experience with SSO/federation, PIM, passwordless/Zero Trust, and ServiceNow ITSM.
Exposure to CI/CD or Infrastructure as Code workflows and Microsoft Sentinel.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
ABILITIES
Ability to integrate Microsoft 365 with enterprise systems and security services.
Able to handle multiple tasks or projects at one time, meeting assigned deadlines
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of Defender and Purview controls, including retention, eDiscovery, & legal hold.
Deep expertise in Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive administration.
Strong understanding of hybrid identity; knowledge of Entra ID and on-prem AD integration.
Knowledge of Access, MFA, & role based access design; knowledge of PIM.
Microsoft Defender for Office 365 and Defender for Endpoint configuration experience.
Knowledge of Microsoft Purview retention, eDiscovery (Standard/Premium), legal hold, and DLP policies.
Knowledge of PowerShell scripting and Microsoft Graph API for platform automation and reporting.
Knowledge of Intune device compliance concepts & policy interactions with M365.
Familiarity with Teams Voice/Direct Routing, telephony concepts, & call flow basics.
Familiarity with Governance patterns for Teams/SharePoint lifecycle, external sharing, & sensitivity labels.
Understanding of SSO/federation models & Zero Trust principles.
Familiarity with Microsoft Sentinel, logging, auditing, & alerting workflows.
Knowledge and experience with ServiceNow or similar ITSM tooling; strong incident, problem, & change practices.
Experience with migrations to Microsoft 365, including content restructuring and adoption.
Knowledge of FERPA and HIPAA considerations for collaboration and data protection.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management, and presentation skills
Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e., Microsoft Office suite)
