What is the difference between Performance Tester Remote vs Performance Engineer?

AspectPerformance Tester RemotePerformance Engineer
CertificationsISTQB, CAST, or similar testing certificationsISTQB, GCP, AWS certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentRemote, project-based testing teamsRemote or on-site, involved in system architecture
Primary FocusExecuting performance tests, identifying bottlenecksDesigning performance solutions, optimizing systems
Industry UsageSoftware testing, QA teamsDevOps, software development, system architecture

Performance Tester Remote roles focus on executing performance tests and identifying system bottlenecks, often within QA teams. Performance Engineers have a broader scope, including designing performance strategies and system optimization. Both roles may be remote but differ in responsibilities and required skills, with Performance Engineers typically involved in more technical and architectural tasks.

What are Performance Tester Remote jobs?

Performance Tester Remote jobs involve evaluating the speed, responsiveness, and stability of software applications from a remote location. These professionals design and execute tests to simulate various user loads and identify performance bottlenecks. They often use specialized tools to monitor system behavior and report issues to development teams for optimization. Remote performance testers collaborate using online platforms and may work with global teams, ensuring software performs well under real-world conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Performance Tester (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Performance Tester (Remote), you need expertise in performance testing methodologies, scripting languages (such as Java or Python), and a solid understanding of software QA principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like LoadRunner, JMeter, or Gatling, as well as experience with CI/CD pipelines and cloud platforms, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills, especially when working remotely with distributed teams. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate identification and resolution of performance bottlenecks, leading to reliable and scalable software applications.

Job description

Engineers are the reason we exist-they're the core of who we are. We don't just build technology; we engineer the future. From next-gen aerospace to cutting-edge defense systems, our teams power the solutions that drive innovation, tackle mission-critical challenges, and keep people safe. This is where problem-solvers and big thinkers thrive.

Quest Defense Systems & Solutions is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to support a mission-critical effort focused on advancing assured Positioning, Navigation, and Timing capabilities for military platforms operating in complex and contested environments.

In this role, you will design, develop, debug, and test embedded software that supports real-time system functionality, interface integration, and reliable data communication across connected systems. This is a strong fit for an engineer who enjoys hands-on C++ development, I/O and interface work, embedded system troubleshooting, and building software that directly supports resilient navigation and timing capabilities.

The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in embedded software, experience with back-end C++ and system interfaces, and the ability to collaborate across engineering teams to validate software performance and system integrity. Experience with Embedded Linux, DDS communications, Qt or XAML GUI tools, MIL-STD-1553, I2C, BSPs, drivers, or PNT-D technologies is highly valuable.

This opportunity may be performed in a remote or hybrid/onsite capacity, with travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa up to 25% as needed. U.S. citizenship is required.

This is a temporary hourly position with the potential for extension or conversion to a regular full-time salaried position based on business needs, performance, and available opportunities. Conversion is not guaranteed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software in C++ for mission-critical navigation and timing systems.
  • Support back-end software development, input/output processing, and interface integration across embedded systems.
  • Develop, debug, and troubleshoot software functionality in lab, integration, and system-level environments.
  • Analyze and test internal interfaces to support reliable communication, data flow, and overall system performance.
  • Create, execute, and maintain unit tests, ad hoc tests, and formal test procedures to verify software functionality and integrity.
  • Support integration of serial and digital I/O interfaces, including communication with hardware, drivers, and related system components.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams, including software, systems, hardware, and test, to resolve technical issues and support program milestones.
  • Document software design, test results, defects, and technical findings in alignment with engineering and program standards.
  • Support software updates, issue resolution, and validation activities throughout the development lifecycle.

Required Qualifications:

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • 7+ years of experience in embedded software development.
  • Strong C++ development experience, with emphasis on back-end software, system-level development, and input/output processing.
  • Experience debugging, troubleshooting, and testing embedded software in lab, integration, or system-level environments.
  • Experience working with serial, digital I/O, or other hardware/software interfaces.
  • Ability to develop and execute unit tests, integration tests, or software validation procedures.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with software, systems, hardware, and test engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with DO-178C software development or verification
  • Experience with Embedded Linux.
  • Experience with Qt, XAML, or other GUI development tools.
  • Familiarity with DDS communications.
  • Experience with I2C, MIL-STD-1553, or similar serial/data bus protocols.
  • Basic knowledge of Board Support Packages, device drivers, or low-level hardware integration.
  • Experience with Positioning, Navigation, and Timing systems, including PNT-D or assured PNT technologies.
  • Experience supporting defense, aerospace, avionics, or other mission-critical embedded systems.
