What is a performance tester contract?

Performance Tester Contracts are agreements in which organizations hire professionals on a temporary basis to assess and validate the speed, scalability, and reliability of software applications. Performance testers working under contract typically conduct various types of testing, such as load, stress, and endurance testing, to identify performance bottlenecks and ensure applications meet required standards. These testers use specialized tools to simulate multiple users and analyze system behavior under different conditions. Contract roles provide flexibility for both the employer and the tester, often focusing on specific projects or deliverables. This arrangement is ideal for organizations needing expertise for a limited time or for large-scale deployments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a performance tester on contract?

To thrive as a Performance Tester on contract, you need expertise in performance testing methodologies, scripting, and a solid understanding of software development life cycles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as JMeter, LoadRunner, or Gatling, as well as experience with CI/CD systems and cloud platforms, is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help testers identify bottlenecks and clearly report findings to stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure systems meet performance standards and deliver reliable, scalable user experiences.

What are some common challenges performance testers on contract face when working with new clients or applications?

Performance Testers on contract often encounter challenges such as limited access to key stakeholders, incomplete documentation, and varying levels of application maturity. Quickly understanding the client’s system architecture and performance requirements is essential but can be difficult with tight deadlines and unfamiliar environments. Additionally, contract testers may need to adapt to diverse toolsets and processes across different organizations, which requires strong technical agility and communication skills to ensure effective test planning and execution.

Your expertise can help deliver safe, clean energy. Join WECTEC Staffing Services, the talent arm wholly owned by Westinghouse Electric Company LLC, and support nuclear sites with high-stakes AOV diagnostics and maintenance.

Why this matters

During an outage or critical maintenance window, minutes count. You’ll arrive on site, align with the On-Site Manager, and take ownership of diagnostics, testing, and documentation so decisions are made quickly and accurately.

Contract Essentials
  • Short-term assignment: ~4–6 weeks
  • 40–72 hours per week
  • 100% travel
  • Opportunity for multiple short-term assignments
Your mission
  • Serve as the go-to field resource for AOV maintenance across a variety of valve types and sizes.
  • Execute functional post-maintenance testing, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and both corrective and preventive maintenance.
  • Interpret diagnostic results and recommend repair strategies that drive first-time quality.
  • Honor procedural compliance and mechanical safety clearance requirements at every step.
  • Complete work per work orders; keep records detailed and accurate, and verify documentation quality.
  • Perform diagnostic testing aligned with customer specifications and contractor parameters.
  • Apply human performance tools (e.g., 2-minute rule, ALARA) to minimize risk.
  • Support additional duties within your capabilities as requested by management.
  • Be prepared for overtime, including shifts, weekends, and holidays.
What you bring
  • High school diploma or equivalent; EPRI or technical/vocational training.
  • At least 3 years of nuclear industry experience in AOV/actuator valve and General Valve maintenance and diagnostic testing.
  • Mechanical and electrical skill set with the ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical references.
  • U.S. Navy nuclear background or comparable reactor operations/maintenance training.
  • Positive performance history supported by client and contractor feedback.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, electrical instruments, and diagnostic equipment; adherence to OSHA or client rules for electrical/mechanical safety.
  • Complete and pass all pre-employment and employment screening requirements, which may include practical and written skills assessments, computer-based training, medical, psychological, background, and substance abuse screenings.
Our safety commitment

If you are as committed to your success as we are committed to your safety, then this is the position for you! For us, our guiding principle has always been and will continue to be the safety of our people. It's that simple!
