What kinds of projects or tasks can a Performance Nutrition Intern expect to be involved with on a daily basis?

As a Performance Nutrition Intern, you’ll typically assist with tasks such as preparing and distributing athlete meal plans, organizing nutrition education sessions, and collecting dietary data for analysis. You may also help track hydration status, support the execution of fueling stations, and collaborate with dietitians to develop educational materials. Interns often work closely with athletes, coaches, and sports medicine staff, gaining hands-on experience in both individual and group settings. These responsibilities provide a strong foundation in applied sports nutrition and offer valuable exposure to multidisciplinary teamwork in an athletic environment.

What are Performance Nutrition Interns?

Performance Nutrition Interns are students or recent graduates who assist sports nutrition professionals in supporting athletes' nutritional needs. They help with tasks such as meal planning, nutrition education, and research to optimize athletic performance and recovery. Interns often work under the supervision of registered dietitians or sports nutritionists and gain hands-on experience in both individual and team settings. This role is ideal for those pursuing careers in sports nutrition or dietetics and provides exposure to the daily operations of performance nutrition programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Performance Nutrition Intern, and why are they important?

Familiarity with dietary analysis software, data collection tools, and basic laboratory techniques is commonly required. Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills help interns effectively support athletes and collaborate with multidisciplinary staff. These skills are crucial for delivering evidence-based nutrition guidance that enhances athletic performance and promotes overall health.
