Performance Attribution information

What is performance attribution?

Performance attribution is a process used in finance to analyze and explain the sources of a portfolio’s returns relative to a benchmark. It breaks down the excess return into components such as asset allocation, security selection, and other factors, helping investors and managers understand which decisions contributed positively or negatively to performance. This analysis is crucial for evaluating investment strategies and refining future decision-making. Performance attribution can be conducted at various levels, such as by sector, region, or individual security, depending on the needs of the portfolio manager.

How does a performance attribution analyst typically collaborate with portfolio managers and investment teams?

Performance Attribution analysts work closely with portfolio managers and investment teams to provide detailed insights into the sources of portfolio returns. They regularly analyze data to break down performance by asset class, sector, or security, and present findings through reports and presentations. This collaboration helps investment teams understand the impact of their decisions, identify areas for improvement, and refine investment strategies. Strong communication skills and a deep understanding of portfolio construction are essential for effective collaboration in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in performance attribution, and why are they important?

To thrive in Performance Attribution, you need a solid understanding of financial markets, investment concepts, and quantitative analysis, often supported by a finance-related degree or CFA certification. Familiarity with performance measurement systems like FactSet, Morningstar, or Bloomberg, and proficiency in Excel or Python for data analysis, are typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly make professionals stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for accurately analyzing investment performance and effectively supporting portfolio management decisions.

What is the difference between Performance Attribution vs Portfolio Analyst?

Required SkillsQuantitative analysis, financial modeling, understanding of investment strategiesData analysis, reporting, understanding of investment products
Work EnvironmentFinancial institutions, asset management firms, investment banksAsset management firms, investment firms, financial services

While both roles involve analyzing investment portfolios, Performance Attribution focuses specifically on breaking down and explaining the sources of returns, whereas a Portfolio Analyst provides broader support in monitoring and managing overall portfolio performance. Performance Attribution specialists often have advanced quantitative skills, whereas Portfolio Analysts may focus more on data reporting and operational tasks.

Job description

At Holiday Inn Club Vacations, we believe in strengthening families. And we look for people who exhibit courage, caring and creativity to help us become the most loved brand in family travel. We’re committed to growing our people, memberships, resorts and guest love. That’s why we need individuals who are passionate in life and bring those qualities to work every day. Do you instill confidence, trust and respect in those around you? Do you encourage success and build relationships? If so, we’re looking for you.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking a high-impact, strategically minded Vice President of Performance Marketing to lead a team of twenty-five (25) accomplished marketers and oversee a multi-million-dollar performance budget. This individual will report directly to the SVP of Marketing and serve as a key partner in driving demand, pipeline, tours, revenue and owner/member engagement across new customer acquisition and the existing owner lifecycle.

The ideal candidate is a data-obsessed performance marketer and transformation leader who brings strong leadership, deep channel expertise, and a future-forward mindset — including practical application of AI and emerging technology — to evolve how we operate and grow.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • Growth Strategy: Lead full-funnel performance strategy across paid media, owned channels, CRM and digital platforms — translating enterprise growth objectives into measurable acquisition, pipeline, tour, lifecycle engagement and revenue plans. Activate owner/member growth and retention strategies through CRM, segmentation, personalization and lifecycle marketing.
  • AI Innovation & Transformation: Lead adoption of AI, automation, and emerging technology across targeting, personalization, measurement, workflows, and productivity to elevate performance, scale, and organizational capability.
  • Strategic Leadership: Lead the day-to-day Performance Marketing organization and partner with the SVP of Marketing on strategy, investment decisions, transformation priorities and enterprise growth objectives.
  • Investment & Financial Accountability: Partner with the SVP of Marketing on performance marketing investment strategy, allocating budget and resources across the portfolio to optimize incremental revenue, profitability, CAC, LTV, pipeline and enterprise growth.
  • Team Development: Inspire, coach and elevate a twenty-five (25) person team spanning digital acquisition, CRM/lifecycle marketing, media and performance marketing capabilities. Build a high-performance, high-trust culture while strengthening organizational design, leadership bench, succession planning, accountability and operating discipline.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Partner with Marketing Analytics & Insights to establish performance measurement frameworks across KPIs, experimentation, attribution, marketing mix modeling, forecasting and lifetime value, and translate insights into investment, channel and optimization decisions.
  • Innovation & Growth: Identify, evaluate, and activate new channels, partnerships, and growth models with a rigorous test-and-learn approach — with particular focus on emerging consumer behaviors and distribution opportunities.
  • Executive Leadership & Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate across Brand, Sales, Technology, Product, Finance, Marketing Analytics & Insights and the Executive Team to ensure alignment, communicate investment recommendations, and maximize marketing impact.

This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee in this position. It is not intended to give all details or a step-by-step account of the way each procedure or task is performed. The incumbent is expected to perform other duties necessary for the effective operation of the department.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 12+ years of progressive marketing experience, with 5+ years in a senior performance marketing leadership role.
  • Experience leading large teams and managing multi-million-dollar budgets in complex, fast-paced environments.
  • Mastery of performance marketing channels, marketing technology stacks, CRM, and data/analytics platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience leading marketing innovation and transformation, including applying AI to marketing strategy, measurement, and operations.
  • Significant experience in timeshare/vacation ownership strongly preferred, with demonstrated understanding of complex lead generation, tour, sales and owner lifecycle models. Relevant experience in travel, hospitality or other high-consideration consumer businesses may also be considered.
  • Executive presence with a collaborative, empowering leadership style.
  • Relentlessly metrics-driven, resourceful, and strategic with a strong bias for action.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides strategic and day-to-day leadership, organizational direction, coaching, talent development and performance management for a team of approximately twenty-five (25) marketing professionals.
