What types of projects or tasks do Perception Interns typically work on during their internship?

Perception Interns often assist with real-world projects involving computer vision, sensor data analysis, and machine learning model development. They may work on tasks such as data labeling, algorithm prototyping, testing sensor systems, and collaborating with full-time engineers to improve perception pipelines for autonomous systems. Interns frequently participate in team meetings, code reviews, and research discussions, gaining exposure to both the technical and collaborative aspects of the field. This hands-on experience helps interns develop practical skills and gain insight into how perception technologies are developed and deployed in industry settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Perception Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Perception Intern, you generally need a background in computer science, robotics, or a related field, along with foundational knowledge of computer vision and machine learning principles. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or C++, and experience with libraries such as OpenCV, TensorFlow, or ROS, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills enable interns to effectively contribute to perception system development, ensuring accurate data interpretation and successful project outcomes.

What is a perception intern?

A perception intern is a role focused on studying and analyzing how individuals perceive and interpret information, often within fields like psychology, marketing, or user experience. The internship typically involves data collection, analysis, and using tools such as surveys or software to understand perception patterns. It provides practical experience in research methods and data interpretation.

Do optometry interns get paid?

Perception internship programs in optometry are often unpaid or offer stipends, depending on the organization and location. Interns typically gain practical experience and may need to cover their own expenses, but some programs do provide compensation or academic credit.

What is a Perception Internship?

A Perception Internship is a temporary position, typically for students or recent graduates, focused on developing skills in computer vision, sensor data processing, and machine perception. Interns work on projects related to enabling machines or robots to interpret and understand their environment using cameras, LiDAR, radar, and other sensors. These internships are common in industries like autonomous vehicles, robotics, and artificial intelligence research, offering practical experience in areas such as deep learning, image processing, and sensor fusion. The role often involves collaborating with experienced engineers, contributing to real-world projects, and learning about the latest advancements in perception technology.

How to do an internship with no experience?

To pursue a perception internship with no experience, focus on developing relevant skills such as data analysis, critical thinking, and familiarity with perception-related tools or software. Highlight any related coursework, volunteer work, or personal projects in your application to demonstrate your interest and willingness to learn.

What are the big 4 internships?

The Big 4 internships typically refer to internship programs at Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY), and KPMG. These firms offer internships in areas such as audit, consulting, tax, and advisory, providing valuable experience and potential pathways to full-time roles in accounting and professional services.

What is the difference between Perception Internship vs Data Analyst Internship?

AspectPerception InternshipData Analyst Internship

Job description

About the Droid Perception Team

The Droid Perception team owns both onboard and offboard (cloud-side) perception systems that inform, validate, and augment our onboard autonomy. From generating rich 3D and semantic priors from aerial survey data to learning customer preferences and terrain features at scale, your work will help define how we prepare Zipline aircraft to perform mission-critical deliveries in complex, real-world environments.

The Role

You'll dive into ML model experimentation, evaluation and integration -  pushing the boundaries of our current offboard perception system. Our distinctive challenges require groundbreaking approaches, and you'll have the chance to see your ideas transition from concept to real-world application. In a fast-paced and collaborative environment, you'll look at current research in the field, and use that to propose novel solutions to our pressing perception challenges. Join us, and be at the frontier of shaping the future of autonomous deliveries.

What You'll Do
  • Ideate, experiment and iterate on learning-based solutions for unique perception challenges.
  • Collaborate closely with team members, brainstorming and deriving creative solutions from first principles.
  • Leverage heterogeneous sources of data (real-world, simulation and internet-scale data) to train machine learning models.
  • Ship production code to train, validate and integrate models into the perception system.
  • Share findings and insights, fostering knowledge exchange across teams.
What You'll Bring
  • You must have completed the second year of your undergraduate studies. Masters and PhD students are also eligible.
  • A proven history of quality ML research, reflected by publications in conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, CoRL, RSS, etc.
  • Specific expertise in areas such as multi view depth estimation, semantic segmentation, generative modeling, etc.
  • Proficiency with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow.
  • Experience writing code in a production environment, e.g. at a previous internship.
  • Ability to rapidly experiment, iterate, and adapt to new findings in a dynamic environment.
What Else You Should Know

Our internships are full-time positions, in-person at our South San Francisco or Dallas office. We will host our Fall 2026 interns from September to December.

The hourly rate for this internship is $50 per hour. Additional benefits may include relocation support, a housing stipend, overtime pay, paid sick time, and other benefits, where applicable and subject to local requirements.
