What is a perception algorithm engineer?

A Perception Algorithm Engineer is a professional who develops algorithms that enable machines—such as autonomous vehicles or robots—to interpret and understand sensory data from their environment. This typically involves processing data from cameras, lidar, radar, and other sensors to identify objects, track movement, and understand surroundings. Perception Algorithm Engineers work with computer vision, sensor fusion, and machine learning techniques to create reliable and efficient perception systems. Their work is crucial in making machines aware of their surroundings and enabling them to respond appropriately. They often collaborate with hardware, software, and robotics teams to integrate their algorithms into real-world applications.

What are some common challenges faced by perception algorithm engineers when integrating their solutions into autonomous systems?

Perception Algorithm Engineers often encounter challenges when ensuring their algorithms perform reliably in diverse real-world environments, such as varying lighting, weather conditions, and sensor noise. Integrating algorithms with hardware requires close collaboration with robotics and systems engineering teams to optimize performance and latency. Additionally, balancing accuracy with computational efficiency is crucial, as perception modules must run in real time on embedded systems. Addressing these challenges involves rigorous testing, continuous model improvement, and effective cross-functional communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a perception algorithm engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Perception Algorithm Engineer, you need a strong background in computer vision, machine learning, and programming (typically C++ or Python), often supported by a degree in computer science, robotics, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV, and ROS, as well as experience with sensor data (e.g., LiDAR, cameras), is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are vital to develop robust perception systems that enable autonomous vehicles and robots to interpret and interact safely with complex real-world environments.

Mujin is the future of industrial robotic systems in production and distribution environments. Our technology gives robots perception and awareness, enabling them to take on more advanced tasks. We aim to revolutionize the use of robotics within industry to free human resources from labor-intensive tasks to focus on more intellectual challenges.
As the Software Team Lead for Warehouse Execution Systems (WES) at Mujin, you will play a pivotal role in providing technical leadership and management support to a focused R&D team developing innovative software solutions. Team Leads are a vital part of the product development organization and lead software development for critical components of the Mujin system. The role collaborates with other colleagues and stakeholders to successfully launch Mujin products, while also providing remote and onsite support.
Your team's mission is advancing state-of-the-art for scheduling and controlling automation assets on an industrial floor. You will develop cutting-edge robotics technology, including the design, development, testing, and implementation of execution and scheduling algorithms that run on multiple robots in real-time and perform order fulfillment. Our applications are performance-critical and involve autonomous interactions with the surrounding world in an uncontrolled environment. You will build, test, and deploy your work in simulation and in the real world on the world's most advanced hardware. You will contribute to the development of ambitious high-impact projects as part of a dedicated team of world-class "Mujineers".
Ideal candidates will possess a combination of product development expertise, problem-solving, curiosity, innovation, leadership, and communication. If you're passionate about pushing the boundaries of technology, this role offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of intelligent robotics automation.
Position Description:
  • Support 4-8 individual contributors from early career through senior level.
  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable WES architectures for real-time decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Develop orchestration logic for inventory flow and order prioritization across automation layers.
  • Build APIs and integration layers for Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and automation platforms.
  • Optimize algorithms for throughput and task scheduling in lifelong and online domains.
  • Collaborate with other teams to ensure seamless system interoperability.
  • Review code and provide developers with constructive feedback to drive continuous improvements in quality and reliability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless system integration.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues in deployed systems.
  • Instill discipline and quality-first culture for timely delivery and exceptional user experience.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, and team communications; and facilitate career path planning.
