How much do per hospitalist jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for per hospitalist in the United States is $136.14, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $120.19 and $158.65 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Where do hospitalists make the most money?

Hospitalists tend to earn higher salaries in regions with a higher cost of living and greater demand for healthcare services, such as metropolitan areas or states with a shortage of physicians. Factors like hospital type, experience, and work hours also influence compensation levels for hospitalists.

How to make a lot of money as a hospitalist?

Hospitalists can increase their earnings by working in high-demand regions, taking on additional shifts or moonlighting, and gaining specialized certifications such as in critical care or procedures. Negotiating contracts, working for organizations that offer bonuses or incentives, and gaining experience can also lead to higher compensation.

What is a Per Hospitalist?

A Per Hospitalist is a physician, typically trained in internal medicine, who provides medical care to hospitalized patients on a per diem or temporary basis rather than as a full-time staff member. Per hospitalists work shifts as needed, filling gaps in hospital coverage and helping manage patient care during admissions, rounds, and discharges. This flexible role is essential in maintaining continuous patient care, especially during staff shortages or peak periods. Hospitals rely on per hospitalists to ensure patients receive timely and effective treatment throughout their stay.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Per Hospitalist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Hospitalist, you need a medical degree (MD or DO), board certification in internal or family medicine, and strong clinical and diagnostic skills. Familiarity with hospital information systems, electronic medical records (EMRs), and current treatment protocols is essential. Excellent communication, decision-making, and teamwork skills help hospitalists effectively coordinate patient care and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial to ensure high-quality, efficient inpatient care and optimal patient outcomes in a hospital setting.

What are some common challenges faced by Per Hospitalists, and how can they manage them effectively?

Per Hospitalists often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to different hospital protocols, managing high patient volumes during peak times, and coordinating care across multidisciplinary teams. Because they may work in various facilities or cover shifts on an as-needed basis, strong communication skills and flexibility are essential. Building effective working relationships with permanent staff and staying updated on each hospital's electronic health record systems can help Per Hospitalists provide consistent, high-quality patient care while minimizing stress and transition time.

How much do per diem hospitalists make?

Per diem hospitalists typically earn between $1,200 and $2,000 per day, depending on location, experience, and shift length. They often work flexible schedules and may receive additional compensation for night or weekend shifts.

What jobs pay $2000 a day?

Per hospitalist roles typically do not pay $2000 a day; however, some specialized medical professionals such as locum tenens physicians, anesthesiologists, or surgeons working in high-demand settings can earn daily rates around or exceeding this amount. These positions often require advanced certifications, extensive experience, and are usually temporary or contract-based to meet staffing needs.
