What is a per diem traffic control flagger?

Per Diem Traffic Control Flaggers are workers hired on an as-needed (per diem) basis to manage and direct traffic at construction sites, road work zones, or public events to ensure the safety of workers, drivers, and pedestrians. Their main duties include setting up warning signs, using flags or paddles to guide vehicles, and communicating with other workers to coordinate safe traffic flow. Since they work per diem, their schedules are flexible and based on the specific needs of employers, making this a suitable role for those seeking occasional or part-time work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem traffic control flagger?

To thrive as a Per Diem Traffic Control Flagger, you need knowledge of traffic safety procedures, situational awareness, and often a flagger certification from a recognized authority like OSHA or a state department of transportation. Familiarity with two-way radios, traffic signs, cones, and personal protective equipment (PPE) is typically required. Attention to detail, alertness, and strong communication skills help ensure effective coordination and safety on job sites. These skills are critical for preventing accidents and maintaining smooth and secure traffic flow around construction or maintenance zones.
