What is a per diem tile and marble setter?

Per diem tile and marble setters are skilled tradespeople who are hired on a daily basis to install tile, marble, and similar materials on floors, walls, and other surfaces. Working per diem means they are paid a daily rate rather than a salary or hourly wage, often for temporary or short-term projects. Their duties include measuring surfaces, cutting tiles or marble to fit, applying adhesives, and ensuring precision and quality in the installation. This type of work is common in construction, renovation, and remodeling projects where specialized skills are needed for a limited time. Per diem tile and marble setters must have experience with various materials and tools, and often travel to different job sites as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem tile and marble setter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Tile And Marble Setter, you need expertise in measuring, cutting, and installing tile and marble, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and on-the-job training. Familiarity with tools like tile cutters, wet saws, trowels, and levels, as well as knowledge of adhesives and grouting compounds, is essential. Attention to detail, physical stamina, and effective communication with clients and team members are important soft skills. These skills ensure precise installation, customer satisfaction, and adherence to project timelines and safety standards.

What are some common challenges faced by per diem tile and marble setters, and how can they be managed effectively?

Per diem tile and marble setters often encounter challenges such as adapting to different work sites, managing variable schedules, and quickly understanding client preferences or specifications. Job description

Tile Setter — Residential Remodeling
T Brothers Renovations | Buffalo, NY
Full-time, year-round | $25.00 – $32.00 per hour

We are looking for a tile setter who cares about what is behind the tile, not just what shows.

Anybody can make a wall look good on the day it is finished. We are looking for the person whose showers are still right in twenty years.

T Brothers Renovations does high-end kitchens, bathrooms, additions, and whole-home renovations across Western New York. Our clients are usually living in the house while we are working in it. Our bathrooms are the work people photograph, and they are also the work that comes back to bite a company that cut a corner. We do not cut that corner, and we are looking for somebody who never wanted to.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
  • Building and waterproofing showers, pans, and wet walls.
  • Setting floor and wall tile, including large format, and natural stone.
  • Layout — reading the room, dry-laying, setting your lines so the cuts land where they should.
  • Niches, benches, curbs, curbless entries, and glass-ready walls.
  • Grout, silicone, and the transitions and details that decide whether a bathroom looks finished.
  • Working with your field lead, the plumber, and the glass company.
  • Keeping the space clean and protected, because you are in somebody's home.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
  • Real experience setting tile in residential bathrooms and kitchens.
  • You know how to waterproof properly and you can walk us through how you do it.
  • High standards. The kind where the parts nobody sees are done right anyway.
  • Dependable. Tile has stages you cannot walk away from, and you already know that.
  • Professional inside a client's home.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Your own hand tools. We supply the saws and the rest of the equipment.

PAY AND BENEFITS:
  • $25.00 – $32.00 per hour, depending on experience and skill.
  • If you are further along than that and the work backs it up, apply anyway and tell us what you are looking for. We would rather have the conversation than miss the right person over a number in an ad.
  • Full-time, year-round work.
  • Monday through Friday, with an occasional Saturday when a job needs it. We tell you ahead of time.
  • You bring your hand tools, we supply the saws and the rest of the equipment.
  • Six paid holidays after six months.
  • Paid vacation after one year, and it grows the longer you are here.
  • Paid sick time, per New York State.
  • Take on more and your pay moves with it. That is the only way anybody moves up here.

HOW WE WORK:
We are family-run and it actually feels like it. People look out for each other, and nobody here is a number.

We try to keep everybody working inside their own trade. A tile setter here sets tile. That is how people get good and how the work comes out right.

But we do not do "that's not my job." There may be times when finishing a project means doing something outside your trade for a bit. That is normal here. We all help each other, we back each other up, and we leave the job complete and the client taken care of.

HOW TO APPLY:
Send us your résumé, or just tell us your story. Tell us about the trickiest bathroom you have done and what you are looking for in your next company. Photos of your work are encouraged — including, if you have them, photos from before the tile went on. Those tell us more than anything else you could send.
