What is a per diem security officer?

A Per Diem Security officer is a security professional who works on an as-needed or on-call basis rather than on a fixed schedule. These officers fill shifts when regular staff are unavailable, such as during vacations, sick leaves, or busy periods. Per Diem Security roles offer flexibility in work hours and are common in settings like hospitals, schools, and events. They perform standard security duties such as monitoring premises, responding to incidents, and ensuring safety, but their work hours and assignments can vary greatly.

How does working as a per diem security officer differ from full-time security roles in terms of scheduling and team integration?

Per Diem Security officers typically work on an as-needed basis, which offers greater flexibility but also means that shift availability may vary week to week. Unlike full-time staff, per diem officers may not have a set schedule and could be called in to cover shifts during employee absences, special events, or peak periods. While you may work with different team members each shift, strong communication and adaptability are important for quickly integrating into various teams and environments. This role is ideal for those seeking flexible hours or supplementary income, but it requires readiness to adapt to changing assignments and team dynamics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem security officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Security Officer, you need a solid understanding of security procedures, surveillance techniques, and a high school diploma or equivalent, with some employers requiring security guard licensure. Familiarity with security systems, such as CCTV, access control, and incident reporting software, is typically expected. Strong observation skills, reliability, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities are essential to ensure the safety of people and property, respond effectively to incidents, and maintain a secure environment.
