Job description

Work Schedule:ย 

Per Diem Option 1A: Must work a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours, per six (6) week scheduling period in direct patient care. Shifts will primarily be between the hours of 7:00 am - 11:30 pm. As applicable to operations, one shift should be an evening, night, weekend or holiday. Hours are based off the operational needs of the department. You will work at University Hospital in Madison, WI.ย 

We are seeking aย Registered Nurse (RN)ย to:

  • Join a team of remarkable nurses that use compassion and teamwork to care for high acuity general care level patients on the 28 bed Acute Care General Surgery unit.
  • Provide post-operative care to patients undergoing complex abdominal surgeries involving the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas (Whipple procedure), gallbladder, and bile ducts.
  • Be part of a team of nurses that are skilled in providing post-operative surgical care for acutely ill patients. Become an expert in management of surgical drains, nasogastric tube placement, administering enteral nutrition, complex wound care with use of would vacs, epidural and PCA pain pump management, and stoma care.
  • Collaborate with multiple surgical services including general surgery, minimally invasive surgery, emergency surgery, and surgical oncology as well as specialty certified Wound and Ostomy RNs.
  • Work in a setting that fosters a culture of professional development through continuing education, support for professional certifications, and mentorship.
  • Be involved in cutting edge, evidence-based therapies and research studies to improve patient outcomes.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and lead practice change.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) Preferred

Work Experience

  • Six (6) months nursing experience or current participant in UW Health's Nurse Residency Program with successful completion of the Nurse Residency Orientation on unit/similar unit. Required
  • Relevant RN Experience Preferred

Licenses & Certifications

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of WI or holds a license issued by a jurisdiction that has adopted the nurse licensure compact Required
  • Current CPR/BLS Certification Required
  • Relevant Certification Preferred
