Unlike full-time or part-time employees, per diem workers have a flexible schedule and may be called to fill in for staff shortages or increased patient demand. They work in hospitals, clinics, laboratories, or blood donation centers. This role requires strong phlebotomy skills, attention to detail, and good patient interaction. It is ideal for those seeking a flexible work schedule while still gaining experience in the medical field.

To thrive as a Per Diem Phlebotomist, you need strong venipuncture skills, knowledge of specimen handling protocols, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often accompanied by completion of a phlebotomy training program and certification. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), safety equipment, and electronic health record (EHR) software is commonly required. Exceptional attention to detail, a calm bedside manner, and effective communication skills help you excel in various healthcare settings. These competencies ensure accurate specimen collection, patient comfort, and efficient integration with healthcare teams during variable and often fast-paced shifts.

What is the work schedule and environment like for a per diem phlebotomist?

As a Per Diem Phlebotomist, you can expect a flexible work schedule that varies based on staffing needs, which may include early mornings, weekends, or fill-in shifts at multiple facilities.
