Clinical Nurse, RN - Per Diem Level II | Labor & Delivery | Nights
Howard University Hospital | Washington, DC
Role Summary
The Clinical Nurse - Per Diem (RN) is a Registered Nurse reporting to the Clinical Nursing Administrator and embedded in the Howard University Hospital Labor & Delivery unit - part of a comprehensive Women and Infant Services program serving the Washington, DC metro area. Through collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, you will deliver safe, effective, patient- and family-centered care to antepartum, intrapartum, and immediate postpartum patients. You will exemplify HUH's CARES values, adhere to ANA standards of practice, and fulfill our nursing mission and vision.
What You'll Do
  • Perform rapid, comprehensive assessments and develop individualized plans of care for antepartum, intrapartum, and immediate postpartum patients across the full spectrum of acuity
  • Monitor and interpret electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) strips using NICHD terminology; communicate nonreassuring findings and escalate via SBAR and chain of command as indicated
  • Initiate, manage, and titrate oxytocin inductions and augmentations per protocol; recognize and respond to uterine tachysystole and fetal heart rate abnormalities
  • Provide skilled intrapartum nursing support through all stages of labor; assist with vaginal, operative vaginal, and cesarean deliveries; function as scrub or circulating nurse in the OR as required
  • Administer magnesium sulfate, corticosteroids, antihypertensives, and other high-risk obstetric medications safely per protocol
  • Provide immediate newborn stabilization at delivery and initiate neonatal resuscitation per NRP guidelines pending NICU response
  • Assess and manage postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) including uterine massage, fundal assessment, quantitative blood loss (QBL) measurement, and hemorrhage bundle activation
  • Recognize and escalate obstetric emergencies including shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, uterine rupture, amniotic fluid embolism, and maternal sepsis; participate in emergency drills and debriefs
  • Establish rapport with patients and families under high-stress conditions, providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support throughout the L&D experience; support skin-to-skin contact and early breastfeeding initiation
  • Document patient care, assessments, and outcomes accurately in the electronic health record; communicate irregularities and continuing care needs across nursing teams
  • Delegate tasks appropriately to non-licensed personnel and assistants
  • Adhere to infection control protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations
  • Participate in unit performance improvement programs, and engage in education, engagement, and practice committees
  • Maintain and grow clinical knowledge through educational workshops, professional publications, and professional societies
  • Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the scope of this role

Required Qualifications
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Minimum three (3) years of bedside RN experience in a Labor & Delivery setting
  • Current, active RN license in the District of Columbia
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) required
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification through the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) required
  • Fetal Heart Monitoring certification required (AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced)
  • Nationally recognized nursing certification in obstetric nursing (e.g., RNC-OB) highly desirable
