What is a per diem machinist?

A Per Diem Machinist is a skilled tradesperson who operates machine tools on a temporary, as-needed basis, often receiving a daily allowance (per diem) for expenses. These machinists typically work on short-term contracts in industries like manufacturing, aerospace, or construction. Their responsibilities include reading blueprints, setting up machines, and producing precision parts. This role is ideal for those seeking flexibility and varied work environments while utilizing their machining expertise.

What does a typical work schedule look like for a per diem machinist, and how does it differ from full-time positions?

As a Per Diem Machinist, your work schedule is flexible and usually based on the company's immediate production demands, meaning you may be called in on short notice for specific shifts or projects. This distinguishes the role from traditional full-time machinist positions, which typically follow a set weekly schedule. The per diem structure is ideal if you prefer occasional work, want to supplement your income, or need work that accommodates other commitments. You'll still be expected to perform at the same high standards as full-time machinists, collaborating with team members to complete jobs efficiently. Such roles often offer exposure to a variety of machining tasks and industries, which can help broaden your skills and experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem machinist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Machinist, you should have a strong background in machining, blueprint reading, and precision measurement, typically backed by experience or vocational training in machining or manufacturing technology. Familiarity with CNC machines, manual lathes, mills, and machining software, as well as applicable safety certifications, is usually required. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication are important soft skills for success in this role. These competencies enable machinists to produce high-quality parts efficiently, integrate smoothly with various teams, and adjust to shifting job schedules or tasks.

  • Direct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT): Schedule and spearhead internal FAT procedures prior to shipment, auditing completed machinery exiting production to guarantee zero-defect quality standards.
  • Drive Engineering Design Improvements: Formulate and submit Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) to design engineering based on real-world field insights, directly optimizing future machinery design.
  • Lead Technical Trade Show Staging: Oversee the technical setup, mechanical alignment, and electrical hookup of custom automated equipment for industry trade shows.

  • Schematics & Controls Aptitude: Fully comfortable troubleshooting automated systems, wiring industrial controls, and interpreting multi-page electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic schematics with minimal oversight.
  • Global Mobility & Passport Readiness: Full, unconditional willingness and capability to travel 40 to 70 days per year, maintaining a valid passport for seamless international field deployments.
  • Communication & Professionalism: Customer-facing communication with an organized mindset essential for operator training, field service logging, and client collaboration.
  • Local Commute & Tooling: Must reside within a daily commute of the Menomonee Falls, WI area and possess a comprehensive mechanical and electrical field service toolset.
  • Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States () without sponsorship requirements.
Preferred Technical Assets (Bonus Skills)
  • PLC / HMI Programming Environments: Exposure to troubleshooting or modifying logic in Rockwell Automation (Studio 5000/Logix) or Siemens TIA Portal setups.
  • Rigging & Precision Alignment: Hands-on experience with precision laser alignment, rigging, and heavy machinery leveling.
  • Client Training Background: Prior experience delivering structured operator and maintenance team training during equipment handovers.
